Choose the Takomo 101 MKII, 201 MKII or 201T MKII by the flight and set gaps you need, then select the shaft and dimensions. The numbers are different product positions, not a ladder you must climb as your handicap improves.

Three sets with different starting points

Takomo’s current MKII comparison positions the 101 as its distance iron, the 201 as its players-distance option and the 201T as its modern players model. The 201 MKII replaces the earlier 101T. That naming change matters when you compare an older review with a current shopping basket.

Current MKII stock set structure
Model Listed set 7-iron loft
101 MKII 5–GW 29°
201 MKII 4–PW 31°
201T MKII 4–PW 33°

These are catalog specifications, not our measured distances. A lower loft can affect the comparison, so a longer 7-iron shot alone does not establish that one head suits you better. Compare carry, landing behavior and the shots that miss your intended strike.

Start at the ends of the set

The 101 package includes a gap wedge where the other two packages start with a 4-iron. Decide which end would actually earn a place in your bag. A golfer already using hybrids might gain little from a new 4-iron. Someone keeping a favorite wedge arrangement may prefer to evaluate that part of the order separately.

Write down your current longest dependable iron, its carry and the carry of the next wood or hybrid. At the other end, identify the wedge you intend to retain. Our wedge-gapping guide explains why the transition deserves its own check. A complete set can still leave an awkward gap to an existing club.

Keep the head decision separate from the shaft decision

Do not use a shaft change to disguise a head comparison. Ideally, try similar overall length and shaft weight while evaluating the heads; then refine the build. A stock shaft that happens to be available in all three sets is not automatically the best option for you.

Ask a fitter to describe the recommendation in writing: shaft model, weight family, flex, playing length, lie and grip size. A recommendation that says only “stiff graphite” leaves too much room for a different order. Our shaft-weight guide helps separate weight from the flex label.

Also distinguish a current MKII specification from an earlier Takomo model carrying a similar number. The 201 MKII product page describes a different construction from the older 201 name that may appear in secondhand listings. Match the full model name before borrowing any specification.

Understand what the home trial can establish

Under the linked return policy, the stock standard-set trial allows the 7-iron to be used while the other irons stay unused and wrapped. A useful 7-iron trial can reveal an uncomfortable weight or unsuitable flight; it cannot directly prove how every sealed long iron and wedge will perform.

Before that trial, choose a repeatable target and your own current 7-iron as a reference. Alternate small groups rather than hitting all the new-club shots after you are fully warmed up. Record ordinary misses as well as good strikes. Avoid a decision based only on the best shot of the session.

Build a basket you can explain

Choose the set composition first, confirm the written fitting dimensions, and check which changes make the order custom. Do not unwrap the whole delivery simply to admire the clubs before reading the current return instructions.

Useful accessories for a trial are a notebook or a simple distance record, not additional clubs ordered to fill hypothetical gaps. The distance worksheet can organize your existing baseline before you spend. Order the set whose complete arrangement makes sense for your bag, rather than whichever model produces the strongest single-club headline.
