Golf Shaft Weight: Compare Mass, Flex and the Finished Club

Choose golf shaft weight as part of a complete club fitting, keeping it separate from flex and total club weight. A model’s number may identify a weight category rather than its exact mass, and the published figure needs to be read with its flex and preparation details. Compare suitable options using ordinary shots and consistent conditions. The lightest available shaft is not automatically the best, and a heavier shaft does not by itself prove better control.

Fujikura MCI: category numbers are not exact mass

Fujikura’s 2025 MCI table lists the MCI 60 Regular at 65g and MCI 80 Regular at 84g. These are manufacturer shaft specifications, not measured weights of complete irons.

The example shows why the full table matters. Read the selected flex and build details instead of converting the model name directly into a gram figure.

Record the current shaft before comparing another

Write down the full name, flex, generation and any weight-category marking. Photograph the label if necessary. A broad description such as graphite regular is not enough to establish a useful baseline or identify a replacement.

If the club was custom built or bought used, ask about its preparation history. Published raw specifications do not reveal how a particular shaft was trimmed or installed. A fitter can assess the finished club and help identify what is known and what remains uncertain.

Decide what you want the change to achieve

Describe the actual issue before selecting a lighter or heavier option. You may be seeking a more manageable overall build, more consistent contact or a different feel through the swing. Those are useful fitting questions; wanting a particular gram number without a reason is less informative.

Avoid choosing from age, handicap or a single swing-speed reading alone. Fujikura recommends fitting because shafts come in many weights, profiles and flexes. The appropriate comparison depends on how the whole club works for you.

Keep flex and weight separate

A move between two shafts can change more than mass. Their bending profiles, balance points and torque specifications may differ as well. If you want to learn about weight, ask the fitter to make the comparison as clear as practical and explain the remaining differences.

Do not assume a heavier Regular is equivalent to a lighter Stiff, or that equal mass means equal behaviour. Read the complete specification for each option. The label is a way to identify a candidate, not a substitute for trying it in the intended head.

Compare normal shots in the intended build

Use a suitable fitting head, a consistent ball and an agreed playing length. Record strike location, carry and dispersion for a group of ordinary swings. Include the misses that you would encounter on the course rather than keeping only the cleanest contact.

Notice whether you can repeat the swing comfortably as the session progresses. If fatigue makes the comparison unreliable, pause and revisit the promising options. Do not attribute every change in the final few swings to shaft mass when the golfer’s condition has also changed.

Look beyond the longest shot

A useful shaft choice should help you produce a workable pattern, not merely a memorable maximum. Compare the typical carry and where the wider misses finish. For irons, consider whether the flight and distance gaps work with the surrounding clubs.

If a lighter option creates more speed but poorer contact for you, the speed number alone does not settle the choice. Equally, a heavier option that feels reassuring still needs usable results. Let the complete evidence guide the decision rather than a familiar rule of thumb.

Specify the finished work

Before reshafting, confirm the exact shaft, flex, length, grip and assembly details with the clubmaker. Ask how the finished balance will be checked and whether a trial club is possible before changing an entire iron set. Include all labour and components in the quote.

Check hosel and tip compatibility through the manufacturer or builder. A suitable mass and flex do not make a shaft mechanically interchangeable with every head. Avoid buying components first and discovering that the intended assembly requires a different part.

Keep the final specification

Save the build sheet and note the practical reason for the choice. It makes future replacements easier and helps distinguish a genuine match from a similarly named shaft. Weight is useful information when it remains connected to the exact model and a repeatable fitting result.
