The most useful golf course map is the one that covers your actual course and gives you the information you need during a round. Choose between a phone app, GPS watch, handheld GPS or laser rangefinder by the job you want it to do. These devices are not interchangeable, and a long feature list does not prove more accurate yardages.

Check coverage for your own course
Look up the exact club and course name in the manufacturer’s coverage tool or the chosen app. Check the correct nine or eighteen holes and any alternative routing. A large worldwide course count is not confirmation that your local layout is current, especially after course changes.
Open the relevant map where possible before subscribing. Check whether it shows the hazards and landing areas you use, which information works offline, how a changed course is reported and whether map updates are included. If a feature is central to your purchase, get its terms for the exact model and region.
Examples with the device category made clear
Bushnell Phantom 3 Slope is a handheld GPS. Its official specification lists front, centre and back distances, hazard information and manual movable-pin positioning. It is not a watch, and manually positioning a pin on a mapped green is different from automatically knowing the day’s precise flag location.

SkyCaddie LX5C is a GPS watch. SkyGolf lists it in its watch range. Check the supplied plan, renewal terms and available map functions for the offer you are considering; do not assume every SkyGolf device has the same membership requirements.
Garmin Approach S72 is a newly announced premium GPS watch. Garmin announced it on 6 October 2026 in 43 mm and 47 mm versions. Some advanced green-reading functions require an active Garmin Golf membership and coverage is limited to selected courses. Confirm the exact UK variant, availability and feature terms before treating it as a purchase option.

Understand what a distance refers to
Front, middle and back yardages describe positions on a mapped green. A daily flag can be elsewhere. Read the device’s manual so you know whether a displayed number uses a selected pin position, a fixed map reference or a slope-adjusted estimate.

Check the cost and routine for a full season
Compare the delivered device price, any subscription, accessories and renewal cost. Confirm that the free functions actually cover your needs. Try the controls with the clothing you use on the course and check the stated battery conditions for the selected model; different case sizes or modes may have different limits.
Course maps support planning, but they do not guarantee current pin positions, usable stock or a lower score. Buy the simplest setup that provides the information you use regularly, then learn its map references before relying on it during a round.
