Keeping a car in a garage with a golf simulator requires a complete changeover plan. A retracting screen solves only part of it: the mat, containment, monitor, cables and stored equipment must also leave a usable parking space. Obtain a survey of both operating layouts before buying.

Two real UK product routes to investigate
Golf Swing Systems lists the Vanish retractable enclosure from £2,999.99, with width and motor options. The listed contents include the impact screen, rear membrane, side and ceiling containment, baffles and brackets. That starting price, checked on 13 September 2026, is not the price of a chosen motorised installation or an entire simulator.
GolfBays lists HomeCourse ProScreen 180 with battery-powered retraction and different mounting options. Ask each supplier to specify the exact stored envelope and deployed layout for its proposed system. A claim that a screen retracts does not mean the projector, mat or launch monitor retracts with it.
Draw the car in the garage first
Measure the actual vehicle with mirrors as normally parked, then allow for getting out, opening the boot where necessary and reaching stored items. Include the garage door through its complete travel, rails, motor, handles and any manual release. A closed-door photograph misses moving parts that can conflict with ceiling equipment.
Ask the installer for two dimensioned plans: the simulator deployed and the car parked. A third changeover sketch is useful if equipment has to travel through a narrow gap. State whether parking must be possible every night or only occasionally. That difference determines how much manual moving is realistic.
| Part | During golf | Before parking |
|---|---|---|
| Screen and containment | Fully deployed to the approved design | Retracted and secured in its specified envelope |
| Mat and landing surface | Stable at the correct ball height | Moved to a defined dry storage position if required |
| Portable radar or camera unit | Aligned for the selected shot area | Protected and stored outside vehicle movement |
| Projector and overhead unit | Mounted clear of swings and impact areas | Still clear of door travel and vehicle clearance |
| Cables and accessories | Routed within the approved setup | No loose leads or balls in the parking path |
The mat often decides whether sharing works
A large stance mat can be more awkward to move than expected, particularly after a long round or late practice session. Ask for its weight, storage orientation and whether it can be handled comfortably by the person who will do the changeover. Do not assume a mat tolerates repeated rolling or a vehicle standing on it.
A sectional system may offer another approach, but its joints, stability and ball height still need to work with the monitor. Our hitting-mat guide covers those construction questions. Include where damp shoes, wet trolley wheels and the car’s dirt will go; the strike surface should not become an informal parking mat.
Specify repeatable setup and containment
Ask how the ball position and launch monitor are restored after moving them. The design should provide a repeatable routine without relying on memory or making arbitrary changes to manufacturer clearances. Test that routine during handover, including the intended left- and right-handed users.
Retraction should preserve the complete ball-containment arrangement when redeployed. A bare impact screen with gaps at its sides is a different system from an enclosure. Have the supplier assess surrounding doors, glazing and ceiling equipment and follow its product instructions. The impact-screen guide explains why fabric size alone cannot approve a bay.
Compare the installed changeover, not the remote control
Request itemised quotes for the selected enclosure, mounting assessment, motor or charging provision, mat storage, projector, monitor and commissioning. Confirm who handles faults in each component and which tasks you must do between parking and practice. We have not obtained private installed quotes or surveyed a garage, so no product here is declared to fit a typical single garage.
Before acceptance, demonstrate parking, getting out and retrieving essential items after the equipment is stowed. Then demonstrate redeployment and a normal practice session. If that routine is too cumbersome, a smaller practice arrangement or dedicated space may be a better purchase. Storage and measuring accessories are useful only once the complete layout is agreed.
