SKYTRAK ST MAX USB Connections: Charging, Data and Display Setup

On SKYTRAK ST MAX, charging, shot data and the projected picture are separate jobs. Use the labeled power connection for power and the documented USB-to-PC route for Windows data. The projector normally receives its picture from the host computer or tablet, not from treating the monitor as a USB video source.

Identify the two USB jobs before plugging anything in

The ST MAX manual illustrates distinct power-only and USB-to-PC connections. Read those labels on the actual unit and follow the diagram for your selected mode. Two cables with similar-looking plugs are not necessarily interchangeable for power, data and display functions.

Lay the supplied equipment out before ordering replacements. Record which cable goes from the power adapter to the monitor and which connects it to the host. If a cable is being replaced, check both its connectors and the function required. A cable sold principally for charging may not provide the data connection you expect.

Three connections, three checks
Connection job What to establish first Useful success check
Power Correct port and specified supply Device powers as the manual describes
Shot data Supported connection mode for the host Application recognizes monitor and receives a shot
Projected image Host output and display input Application appears correctly on the screen

USB mode has a Windows limitation

SKYTRAK documents USB mode for Windows, not macOS or iOS. That is an important purchase boundary if your planned host is an iPad or Mac. A physical adapter does not turn an unsupported USB workflow into a supported one.

For a Windows setup, first establish a direct, simple connection using the documented ports. Check the app recognizes the device before adding hubs or a permanently routed cable. If you need an adapter because the computer’s sockets differ, confirm the adapter supports the required data function rather than relying on its plug shape.

For wider product context, our SKYTRAK guide explains the family. Do not copy an older model’s cable routine into ST MAX without checking this model’s manual.

Choose Network or Direct Mode deliberately

Network Mode places the monitor and host on the same router network. Direct Mode connects the host to the monitor’s own wireless network; an internet warning on that connection can therefore mean something different from a failed shot-data link. The manual explains these as separate operating arrangements.

Choose the mode that matches your intended software and host instructions. If using a shared network, confirm the two devices can communicate rather than assuming any network with the same building name will do. A guest network may isolate devices. Keep the original working connection available while testing a different arrangement.

Do not change several router settings in pursuit of a vague “connection issue.” First determine whether the application can see the monitor, whether the host has internet when required, and whether the problem begins only after switching modes.

Connect the projector to the host

Once the application works on the computer or tablet, establish its display output. Match the exact host’s video capability, adapter and the projector input. Current tablets do not all use the same connector, so an adapter shown in an older diagram is not a universal shopping instruction.

Check the image at the intended resolution and aspect ratio before installing cables in a ceiling or wall. A successfully mirrored desktop does not establish a suitable projector throw distance, lens position or screen fit. Our distance-tools guide links the wider equipment decisions around a simulator.

A sensible troubleshooting and buying order

Test power first, the supported data connection second, and the display third. Make a note of the working arrangement so it is easy to restore after packing the bay away. Keep the host and cables out of the shot and swing areas; cable tidiness must not create tension on the monitor’s sockets.

Buy data cables, display adapters and cable covers only after identifying their specific roles. If the application does not support the intended host or subscription combination, more adapters will not fix the underlying mismatch.
