PXG Lightning Tour vs Tour Mid: Choosing a Fitting Shortlist

Lightning Tour Mid is the logical comparison when you want more stability within PXG’s Tour options; Lightning Tour is positioned for a lower flight and lower spin. Put both in a fitting only if those differences address your actual shots, and compare the complete configurations rather than the Tour label.

What PXG publishes

The US Lightning page describes Tour Mid as a slightly larger profile blending control and forgiveness, while Tour has a compact profile and lower-flight positioning. The stock chart also shows a different lie angle and a narrower left-handed loft choice for Tour.

Lightning Tour options in the US chart
Specification Tour Mid Tour
Right-handed nominal lofts 8,9,10.5 degrees 8,9,10.5 degrees
Left-handed nominal lofts 9,10.5 degrees 9 degrees
Standard lie 60 degrees 59 degrees
Manufacturer flight positioning Mid launch andspin Low launch andspin

These are manufacturer categories and specifications. They do not establish which head will launch lower for you after fitting or which one produces the smallest dispersion with your swing.

Bring a problem, not just a preferred model

Describe the tee shots you want to improve. Too much curve, inconsistent contact and an unhelpfully low flight are different fitting problems. Take your current driver and explain the holes where it feels difficult to use.

If the current club already launches low, do not choose Tour simply because it sounds more advanced. Ask the fitter what evidence would justify that head. If the current flight is excessively high, investigate the full build and strike pattern rather than assuming spin alone explains it.

Make both comparisons useful

First compare similar shafts and playing lengths to understand the heads. Then allow the fitter to optimize each configuration if needed. Keep both results labeled so you know whether an improvement came with a different shaft, length or setting.

Use alternating groups and include normal misses. Look at carry, start direction and the spread of finishing positions. A single long drive can be interesting without being representative enough to guide a purchase.

The driver length guide helps explain why a shorter fitting club can feel easier to strike. If that is the successful setup, have the builder record the finished length and agreed balance rather than ordering the stock version by habit.

Do not lose the fitting in the order

PXG provides adjustable weighting across these heads, but the final positions and weights should come from the session. Photograph the successful setup and ask the fitter to include it on the specification sheet. A generic weight arrangement from another player is not your fitted configuration.

Record the complete shaft name, flex and grip. If the order uses an alternative component, ask whether the result should be retested. Our shaft weight guide provides background on why similar labels can conceal different complete-club feel.

Compare the US purchase fairly

Ask for the actual fitted price, any fitting fee, component upgrades, shipping and tax. If a promotion or eligibility discount is relevant, use only the terms confirmed for your order. Do not treat an advertised saving as an unconditional price for every buyer.

Confirm delivery for the selected handedness and loft, particularly if choosing the limited left-handed Tour option. Keep the purchase and fitting documents together so any later adjustment starts from a known specification.

Tour Mid earns its place if its complete build produces the more usable pattern. Tour earns its place if the lower-flight configuration works without sacrificing the carry and miss tolerance you need. If the difference is small, comfort and repeatability are better tie-breakers than the model’s status in the range.
