For an older PING set, check the official fill-in route before buying a random single iron. A valid set serial number and an authorized retailer can help identify the original specification, but current head and component availability still needs confirmation.

Replacement status is different from a current full-set listing
PING’s US iron catalog marks models including G430, i530, G730, i230 and G Le3 as fill-in or replacement. It lists i540 and G740 separately among current models. An older product page remaining online does not mean it is still being sold as an unrestricted new full set.
The G430 instructions specify an authorized PING retailer, a valid serial number and confirmation of product and component availability. Do not treat the existence of that service as a guarantee that every old shaft, grip or head can still be supplied.
Gather the set information first
| Item | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Model and missing club | Exact family and iron/wedge designation |
| Serial number | Clear photograph from an existing club |
| Current build | Shaft label, grip and known adjustments |
| History | Any reshafting, bending, extensions or repairs |
| Goal | Match the present set or deliberately change a specification |
If you bought the set used, do not assume its current build still matches the original order. Tell the retailer about anything you know and identify what is uncertain. A serial-based record is useful history, but the physical clubs may have changed afterward.
Match the present set, not only the original color code
Have the neighboring irons measured if they have been adjusted or if the replacement must fit a precise progression. Record playing length, loft, lie and grip size as appropriate. A visible lie color alone does not describe the shaft or every subsequent alteration.
Our PING range overview provides model context. The 7-iron loft explanation is useful when distinguishing an original standard loft from a different loft configuration or later adjustment.
Confirm any component substitution
If the original shaft is unavailable, ask for the proposed replacement by full name, weight and flex. Do not assume the same broad flex label means an identical feel or flight. Ask whether the change is limited to one club and how the resulting transition will be evaluated.
A replacement grip can also differ from the worn grips already on the set. Decide whether that is acceptable or whether a planned regrip of the whole set would be more coherent. Keep that optional work separate from the essential replacement quote.
Compare an official replacement with a used single
A used single may be worth considering when it is the correct model and its specification is clear. Add the cost of any required adjustment and inspect its condition. A low-price club needing an uncertain reshaft may not be the simpler purchase.
Request photographs of the actual used iron, not only the model’s catalog image. Ask about length and previous work. If the seller cannot confirm the build, leave that uncertainty in the comparison rather than assuming it matches your set.
Check the gap after delivery
Inspect the order before use, then compare the replacement with the clubs either side. Record normal carry distances rather than relying on one best shot. The distance worksheet can help organize that check.
For a wedge replacement, also evaluate its role on partial shots. Matching the stamped model is only the start; the replacement should restore the useful progression you intended.
These affiliate links open Amazon US search results for the named equipment or accessories.
Check the exact model, generation and seller. Results can include alternatives; a search link does not confirm availability. Use the official supplier links for specialist products and services.
Keep the final invoice and any revised specification with the set’s serial record. That makes future repairs easier and prevents the next replacement from depending on incomplete memory of what was originally ordered.
