How to Choose a Golf Driver: Fitting, Loft and Used Buying Checks

Choose a driver around the shots you need to improve: a costly miss, inconsistent contact, or an unsuitable flight. The right purchase is the head and shaft combination you can control, at a price that includes any work it needs.

Guide checked: 9 October 2026. This is a researched buying guide based on the linked sources and practical purchase checks. We have not carried out hands-on product testing.

Affiliate disclosure: As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Amazon UK buttons open affiliate searches; availability and the exact specification must be checked on the selected listing. Source links are direct.

Editorial correction: Earlier wording claiming that we independently tested every featured product was unsupported and has been removed. The driver examples have also been placed in their proper older-generation context.

Start with your existing driver

Before browsing offers, write down its model, stated loft, playing length, shaft name and flex. Note your usual miss and whether you lose shots through curvature, a low flight or unreliable contact. A few unusually long drives are a poor buying benchmark.

Take that club to a fitting or a supervised comparison. Ask to see typical carry, the spread of shots and impact locations, rather than only the longest total-distance result. If the candidate needs a very different swing to produce one good number, it may be difficult to use on the course.

What the main specifications change

Check What to establish before buying
Loft and sleeve Confirm the head’s stated loft and which settings its own manufacturer permits.
Shaft and length Match the actual shaft label and playing length; a flex letter alone does not identify a build.
Head variant Check standard, draw-biased and low-spin names separately. A shared family name is insufficient.
Contact and dispersion Compare your ordinary strikes, including the miss you are trying to improve.
Price Include delivery, grip, fitting and any missing compatible components.

Handicap and age do not determine one mandatory shaft flex or loft. Use them as context for a conversation with a fitter, alongside your delivery and strike pattern. PING’s WebFit describes its recommendations as a starting point to refine with a certified fitter.

Forgiveness, low spin and draw settings

A low-spin label is a design category, not a promise of extra distance for every player. If a comparison lowers spin but also produces a flight that falls short, the headline number is not useful. Ask whether the flight remains playable on your home course.

A draw setting or heel weight can be worth trying if your common miss curves right as a right-handed golfer. It cannot guarantee that a delivery or contact problem disappears. Keep the settings fixed while comparing shafts, then change one variable at a time so the result has a clear explanation.

New and used: compare the full purchase

The Stealth 2, Paradym, G430, Aerojet and TSR2 names in earlier versions of this guide refer to older product families. This page does not present them as the newest 2026 releases. Older clubs can still be candidates when the actual build, condition and price fit your needs.

  • Ask for photographs of the face, crown, sole, shaft label, sleeve and grip.
  • Confirm whether the sale is a complete driver or a head-only listing.
  • Check for cracks, loose parts, shaft damage and stripped adjustment screws.
  • Find out whether a headcover, correct wrench and returns option are included.

An inexpensive head may become poor value after sourcing a shaft, adapter and grip. Compare the delivered, playable cost with a complete club that already fits.

A useful next step

Shortlist one or two exact models after a fitting, then search those names rather than shopping every driver at once. If you already know you want to investigate an older MAVRIK MAX, the route below is a model-specific search, not a stock confirmation.
