Arccos Air, Phone or Apple Watch: Choose How You Record a Round

Use phone detection if carrying the phone in the required pocket is comfortable. Use a supported Apple Watch if you prefer wrist-based recording with compatible club sensors. Use Air when a dedicated wearable better suits the round, including sensorless play. Choose one recording device in the app; wearing several devices does not mean they all record the same round together.

Choose the recording device separately from the display

The Arccos round-start instructions separate Phone, Apple Watch and Air detection. A watch showing a yardage is not necessarily the device collecting shots. This distinction is particularly important when comparing Apple Watch with a Wear OS watch.

Recording-method comparison
Method Practical requirement Good reason to try it
Phone Correct pocket placement and supported app setup Use hardware you already own
Supported Apple Watch Current compatible watch/phone setup and sensors Avoid a phone in the recording pocket
Air with sensors Charged wearable plus paired clubs Dedicated recording with automatic club ID
Air without sensors Charged wearable and review workflow Play with untagged or rental clubs

Phone detection has a specific carrying position

Arccos specifies the front lead trouser pocket: left for a right-handed golfer and right for a left-handed golfer. If your normal clothing or phone size makes that uncomfortable, test the arrangement before buying more hardware around it.

Leaving the phone on a cart is not the same phone-detection setup. Do not confuse a convenient place to store a phone during an Air-recorded round with the position required when the phone itself detects shots.

Check the actual Apple Watch configuration

The watch support page distinguishes Apple Watch shot detection from rangefinder-only functions on listed Wear OS devices. Verify the exact watch, paired phone, operating systems and current app requirements before purchase.

The published model list we checked is older than some current hardware, so we have not treated an omitted watch as definitively incompatible. Ask Arccos to confirm a specific newer or older model instead of relying on a generic “smartwatch compatible” label.

Air reduces pocket dependence without removing app setup

Air is a dedicated recording device. You still use the app to prepare the round and review information. With compatible sensors, Air handles shot detection and GPS while the sensors identify clubs; without sensors, the club-review workflow changes.

The updated phone support guidance now confirms Android Air support and specifies iOS 17 or newer for iPhone. This supersedes older store FAQ wording that says Android support is still coming.

Run a complete-round ownership test

Check the selected course, starting hole, detection device and charge before play. Afterward, review the recorded shots and compare the scorecard. Note any battery concern, missed entry or uncomfortable carrying arrangement.

Do this before assuming a second device will improve the result. A pairing error or wrong detection setting needs a setup correction; a consistently awkward pocket or wrist arrangement may justify a hardware change.

Buy the least complicated useful setup

Our Apple Watch golf guide discusses the broader wrist-based routine. Our shot-tracking guide helps decide whether automatic club identification is part of the data you need.

If phone detection works comfortably, keep using it. If the watch provides a better routine, verify its exact support before upgrading. If you want a dedicated wearable or frequently use untagged clubs, consider Air and include its membership requirement in the full US purchase comparison.
