Takomo 101 MKII vs Maltby TS3.5: Direct Set or US Component Build?

Compare Takomo 101 MKII and Maltby TS3.5 as two different ways to obtain a finished set: a direct-order iron package and a specified component Pak with an assembly choice. The cheaper headline is not necessarily the cheaper suitable build.

Match the purchase type first

The 101 MKII product page presents Takomo’s complete-set configuration and ordering options. The GolfWorks TS3.5 PMA0376 Pak specifies components, including Score shafts and SuperStroke grips, with assembly selected separately. Other TS3.5 Paks can contain different components.

Do not declare a head winner from construction

The head designs deserve their own fitting comparison. A construction label such as cast or forged is not a measured verdict on forgiveness, feel or distance. Nor does a component brand automatically indicate that a set is inferior to an assembled direct product.

Compare similar playing lengths and suitable shaft weights if you can test both. Record the head’s actual loft when interpreting distance. Our 7-iron loft guide explains why the same club number does not create an equal-loft comparison.

Count only clubs with a job in your bag

Write out the proposed set and place your retained hybrid and wedges alongside it. Identify any duplicated distance or missing transition. A package with an extra club offers little value if that club will remain in a closet.

Use your current longest dependable iron as one reference. At the scoring end, compare the proposed pitching wedge with the next wedge you plan to carry. Our wedge-gapping guide provides a way to record those decisions without assuming equal loft gaps always create equal carry gaps.

Get the fitter and assembler aligned

If an independent fitter recommends your specifications, ask whether the advice transfers confidently to both shortlisted heads. A fitting performed with a different head should be identified as such. You are buying the final combination, not a shaft recommendation detached from the rest of the club.

For the Pak route, ask who is responsible for length, lie, loft, grip installation and final measurement. For the direct route, compare the accepted factory order with any local changes you expect to need. Keep all essential changes inside the price comparison.

Build a total-cost worksheet

For each route, add the current product price, required customization, assembly where applicable, fitting, delivery, checkout tax and any known follow-up work. Use actual quotes. Do not apply a generic online labor estimate to a builder who has not agreed to perform the job.

Record return and alteration terms in a separate line so they remain visible. If one route requires a custom commitment before you can test it, acknowledge that uncertainty. A price saving and a return route are different benefits; neither should be hidden inside a vague claim of value.

Choose a route you can support afterward

Keep the completed build sheet and receipts. They will help if you later need a single replacement shaft, a matching grip or a specification check. Ask who handles a discrepancy between the agreed build and the delivered clubs.

Record your current carry baseline with the distance worksheet before the change. Choose between the Takomo order and Maltby build on the suitable finished clubs and service you will receive. Without matched specifications and testing, there is no defensible universal winner.
