Takomo 101U Utility Iron: Choosing the US Order Build

Choose a Takomo 101U around a specific carry gap or tee-shot job, then confirm the assembled length and shaft. The 2, 3 and 4 labels identify different lofts; they do not tell you which head will be easiest to launch from your usual lies.

The three head choices

The 101U specification lists an 18-degree 2-iron, a 20-degree 3-iron and a 22-degree 4-iron, with a .370 hosel and stock KBS Hybrid graphite choices. These are utility-iron heads, so compare them with the actual club you intend to replace rather than with the same stamped number in an ordinary iron set.

Assign a job before choosing a 101U
Possible job Useful reference club What to compare
Controlled tee option Current fairway wood or driver alternative Carry window, start direction and ordinary misses
Gap above longest iron Longest dependable iron Carry separation and landing behavior
Hybrid replacement Current hybrid Performance from fairway and the rough you normally encounter

Do not begin with the lowest loft

A low-loft utility can sound attractive for windy tee shots, but the order still has to suit your delivery. A shot that runs a long way on firm ground may leave a poor carry gap across a hazard. Separate total distance from carry when deciding which head has a useful place in the bag.

Start with the longest iron you can strike reliably. Record a normal carry range, not only the longest shot, then identify the space to the next club. The distance worksheet can keep those numbers together. If the intended gap is not clear, postpone the head choice until it is.

Tee use and approach use deserve different tests

For a tee club, use a realistic landing corridor and your normal tee height. Include shots that miss the center. Your choice should survive the swings you make on an ordinary round rather than depending on one exceptional strike from a generous practice tee.

For approach use, compare flight and stopping behavior with a hybrid or fairway wood. Test from the ground rather than moving every ball onto a perfect lie. Our driving iron versus hybrid guide explains the broader tradeoff, but it cannot replace a comparison of your own shots.

There is no requirement that one club win both jobs. A utility can make sense as a course-specific replacement while a hybrid remains the better everyday club. Think through which existing club would leave the bag before ordering another long-club option.

Record the whole build

Ask for the playing length, exact shaft model and flex, grip and any requested adjustments in one written specification. “Graphite stiff” is not a complete order description. Two shafts sharing that broad label can create a different total weight and feel.

The .370 hosel specification matters to a builder considering a reshaft; it is not permission to fit any shaft whose product title includes “hybrid.” A qualified builder still needs to check the exact shaft, tip preparation, trimming instructions and final length. Our shaft-weight guide provides useful terminology for that conversation.

Know what you can return

Do not apply the standard iron-set 7-iron trial to a single 101U. Check Takomo’s unused-product return conditions before taking the wrapping off and hitting shots. If a trial is essential, confirm a suitable route before buying rather than discovering the limitation after a range session.

On delivery, compare the printed order with the club: model, loft marking, shaft label, grip and apparent condition. Resolve discrepancies while the club is unused. Once you commit to playing it, keep a short record of the real shots it handles well. The best 101U configuration is the one that fills an identified role without creating a second club for a distance you already cover.
