A GEN8 quote needs the model, club count and complete build before its price means much. P and XP have different standard lofts and lengths, so compare the approach shots and bag gaps they produce rather than choosing the longest same-numbered iron.

P and XP are not the same specification
PXG’s US GEN8 chart provides a useful reference for the difference.
| Reference | 0311 P GEN8 | 0311 XP GEN8 |
|---|---|---|
| 7-iron loft | 30 degrees | 27 degrees |
| 7-iron length | 37 inches | 37.5 inches |
| W loft | 44 degrees | 41 degrees |
| G loft | 49 degrees | 47 degrees |
Those are stock measurements. A fitting may specify a different length or other adjustment, so ask the fitter to distinguish the catalog values from the final order. Do not present the XP’s longer best7-iron shot as proof of a better iron when the starting loft and length also differ.
Build the fitting around usable approaches
Choose a target carry distance and a plausible landing area. Compare the ordinary flight and distance range from each complete build. Record carry separately from total distance, especially when the shot needs to stop near its landing point.
Ask to hit the longest iron you intend to carry. If it lands near the next shorter club, a full standard set may contain an unnecessary long iron. The correct purchase might start with a shorter iron and retain a hybrid that already works.
At the other end, bring the wedges you plan to keep. The different W and G lofts mean a simple number-for-number replacement can alter the bottom of the bag. Use the wedge gapping guide to check the transition before ordering additional wedges.
Understand the fitted build
PXG describes its Dual Perimeter Weighting as part of the fitting process. Ask the fitter to explain the chosen setup and record it with shaft, grip, length, loft and lie. The specification sheet should describe what you are buying, not merely say “GEN8 custom.”
If two shafts work similarly, compare how the club feels later in the session as well as when fresh. Keep the actual weight class and flex on the record. The shaft weight guide explains why a familiar flex letter does not make two different shafts equivalent.
Do not add every available customization because it exists. Each adjustment should have a purpose you understand: a more comfortable setup, a better flight or a useful distance progression. That makes the delivered clubs easier to verify and future changes easier to discuss.
Put every charge on one quote
Ask for an itemized US price with the included club numbers, model, finish, shaft and grip. Separate fitting, upgrades, shipping and applicable tax. A per-club advertisement is not comparable with another shop’s complete-set total until you multiply it by the same useful club count.
If a trade-in or eligibility offer is involved, keep the purchase price and confirmed credit visible separately. Record any deadline and which configuration qualifies. Avoid building the budget around an estimated allowance that has not been confirmed.

What to check when the irons arrive
Match the model and club list to the quote and ask the supplying fitter to verify important measurements. Keep the fitting distances alongside the specification sheet, using the distance worksheet if helpful.
Choose P or XP on the complete result. If one gives you more predictable approaches and a coherent bag, that is useful evidence. If both work similarly, the preferred feel and complete cost can decide without turning a stronger loft into a universal performance claim.
