Cobra 3DP Irons: Full Set or Factory Combo Build?

A full Cobra 3DP set is the simpler choice when one head family works across your irons. A mixed order makes sense when testing shows a clear benefit at one end of the set. Cobra supports custom combinations, but the transition still needs fitting.

Understand the actual factory ordering route

Cobra’s 3DP combo guide describes combining its three iron models and ordering the desired individual clubs from each model’s product page. It presents loft and lie recommendations as a reference to be checked in a professional fitting, not a universal prescription.

That route is different from assuming that any complete set can be divided after purchase without added cost. First establish which heads and individual clubs can be supplied in your handedness, shaft and finish. Then request one itemized total for the actual combination.

When a full set is the sensible result

Try the longest iron you intend to play, a middle iron and a short iron in the same family. If each performs its task comfortably and the gaps make sense, a full set avoids adding a transition you have not shown you need.

A manufacturing method does not determine your ideal set composition. The attraction of 3D printing should not replace an assessment of launch, strike pattern and usable distance. Our iron construction guide explains the wider design categories, while the fitting should establish the particular head that works for you.

When to investigate a combo

Consider a change if you like the short irons but struggle to create useful flight with the longer ones, or if one family gives you a better long-iron result while another suits your scoring shots. Be specific about the improvement you are seeking.

Test both versions around the proposed transition. If you intend to switch head family after a certain numbered iron, hit the clubs on both sides and, where available, the alternate version of the transition club. Compare typical carry rather than equal loft gaps alone.

Full set versus mixed 3DP order
Decision Evidence favoring a full set Evidence favoring a combo
Long-iron flight Current family delivers the required carry Another head produces a more usable shot
Short-iron control Distance pattern remains predictable Another family suits the required scoring shots
Transition No problem to solve Adjacent-club testing confirms sensible gaps
Ordering One coherent stock or custom specification Every individual club can be supplied to the agreed build

Make the order unambiguous

Create a line for each club with model, handedness, loft, lie, shaft, length and grip. Note whether a value is stock or adjusted. Cobra’s published guide contains a general ordering example, but your sheet should reflect the fitting rather than copy that example as a recommendation.

Check how the builder intends to keep the set’s feel consistent. The same shaft label does not settle every question about finished length or balance. Ask for any requested build targets to be recorded before placing the order.

Use the distance worksheet to preserve the fitting distances beside the order. This makes later checks easier and gives you useful evidence if a replacement iron is needed.

Compare the complete US bill

Add individual-club charges, component upgrades, fitting, shipping and tax. A seven-club mixed order should be compared with a seven-club full set that covers the same bag slots. Do not compare a per-club headline with a complete-set total.

Confirm delivery timing for every component and the shop’s policy if an item becomes unavailable. On arrival, compare the model names and club list with the written order before play. Keep the full-set option if the combo does not produce a clear practical benefit; complexity is useful only when it solves the fitting problem.
