An unused SM10 can be a sensible buy when its exact loft, grind and build match the wedge you need. Compare it with SM11 at that same bag slot, including condition and the cost of any changes.

The required sole is more important than the discount
A discounted SM10 deserves consideration when it is genuinely unused, has the required loft and sole, and can be bought in the build you need. If the remaining stock forces a different grind or loft, compare that changed wedge in a fitting before treating it as an equivalent purchase.
Titleist’s SM11 launch information describes a range of 27 configurations across six grinds. The current grind explanations show why the sole choice matters for different shots. These sources establish available design routes, not evidence that every SM11 will outperform a suitably fitted SM10.
| Check | What makes the comparison meaningful |
|---|---|
| Loft | Same intended carry gap and scoring role |
| Grind and bounce | Actual configuration, not only the loft number |
| Condition | Unused stock separated from a worn demonstration club |
| Build | Shaft, length, lie and grip that suit the trial |
| Total cost | Include changes needed to make either wedge usable |
Separate wear replacement from model upgrading
Replacing a heavily used wedge is a different decision from replacing a nearly new one. Inspect your present face and grooves and ask a professional to assess any concern. A comparison between a worn wedge and a new wedge cannot isolate the effect of changing generations.
Likewise, an SM10 listing marked ex-demo may have meaningful wear despite an attractive appearance in a stock photograph. Request close images of the actual face, sole and leading edge. Ask about previous use and modifications before calculating the saving.
Trial the shots the wedge must cover
Bring your pitching wedge and the next wedge above or below the intended purchase. Compare full and partial distances, then test the chips and bunker shots you rely on. A wedge that performs well on a full launch-monitor swing may still be uncomfortable for your most frequent greenside shot.
Use similar lofts and the intended sole configurations when possible. If the fitter changes grind between the SM10 and SM11 candidates, record that fact. The result may support the newer complete wedge without proving that the generation alone caused the improvement.
A clearance wedge should not require a rescue plan
Add a replacement grip, shaft work or an agreed loft adjustment to the older wedge’s price before comparing it with a current fitted order. Ask whether the required workshop work is appropriate for the specific head and what the finished specification will be. Do not buy the wrong available loft on the assumption that any change is straightforward.
Our wedge-bounce guide provides the terminology for discussing the sole. The Titleist range guide gives broader range context. Keep this purchase focused on one bag slot rather than turning a discount into an unnecessary full wedge-set replacement.
Write down the final offer
The quote should identify generation, finish, handedness, loft, bounce, grind, shaft and finished length. Confirm whether the price covers the exact item shown and who handles any product issue. Do not assume an older generation lacks support, or that a new model guarantees a particular seller’s after-sales arrangement; ask about the actual transaction.
Choose the unused SM10 when it matches the job and preserves a worthwhile complete saving. Choose SM11 when the required configuration is available and the fitted result or order practicality justifies the difference. If neither available wedge matches the gap, continue the search rather than buying solely because the offer ends soon.
