Winter Golf Socks UK: Cushioned, Thermal or Waterproof?

UK buying guide · Sources checked 13 October 2026

Choose winter golf socks according to the problem: cushioning for shoe comfort, thermal fabric for colder rounds, or a waterproof membrane for an extra barrier against wet conditions. FALKE GO2, Glenmuir Osiris and Sealskinz Raynham illustrate those three choices. Thickness and shoe fit matter as much as the material name.

Three useful starting points

For cushioning: compare FALKE GO2 if your shoes already keep water out and you want a golf-specific padded sock. It is a cotton and synthetic blend, not a merino sock.

Search Amazon UK for FALKE GO2 16770

For a thermal option: Glenmuir Osiris uses a brushed inner construction. Check the fit in your golf shoes before assuming a thicker sock will be more comfortable.

For waterproof construction: Raynham adds a membrane and a merino-blend lining. It needs enough room inside the shoe and protection from water running over its cuff.

Search Amazon UK for Sealskinz Raynham socks

Merino, thermal and waterproof describe different things

A wool percentage tells you about the yarn. A thermal label describes the intended warmth role. Waterproof construction needs a barrier to liquid water. Treating those terms as interchangeable makes it harder to buy the right sock. For example, Raynham’s inner contains 36% merino wool alongside other fibres; it is not a pure-merino knitted sock, and the lining alone is not what makes it waterproof.

Glenmuir lists Osiris as 93% acrylic, 6% polyester and 1% elastane. FALKE lists GO2 as 40% cotton, 38% polypropylene, 20% polyamide and 2% elastane. These are concrete construction differences, not a measured warmth ranking. We have not compared the three in a controlled winter test.

Try the complete shoe-and-sock combination

Start with the shoes you will actually wear. Put on both socks, fasten both shoes normally and walk on a clean indoor surface. Check the toes, heel and instep while standing and bending into your golf stance. A sock that feels soft in your hand can still crowd a shoe that fitted well with a thinner summer pair.

Avoid solving tightness by loosening the shoe until the heel slips. The useful choice is a sock and shoe that work together. If every thicker sock feels cramped, review the footwear fit instead; our wide-fit golf shoe guide explains width and volume checks. Buy one trial pair before replacing your whole winter supply.

A waterproof sock still has an opening at the top

Sealskinz explains that water entering above the cuff can become trapped inside. Arrange trousers so runoff does not funnel into the opening, and do not treat the sock as protection for wading through water above its height. The outer fabric may become wet even when the membrane is doing its job.

Also look at the cause of wet feet. Worn shoes, water entering around the ankle and damp footwear left from the previous round call for different solutions. A waterproof sock is one option, not an excuse to ignore a damaged shoe. Use our waterproof shoe buying and care guide when the shoe itself needs attention.

Care, drying and buying the right pack

Follow the instructions supplied with the exact sock rather than washing every pair together on habit. Raynham’s page permits a 40°C wash and low tumble or drip drying; GO2 specifies a gentle 40°C wash and no tumble drying; Osiris shows 30°C washing. Check the complete labels for the other restrictions.

Before checkout, verify model, size range, length and number of pairs. A low price can be for a different height or a single pair. For a gift, establish the recipient’s shoe size and whether their winter shoes have room for the selected construction. Keep packaging while they assess the fit under the seller’s return conditions.
