Takomo Skyforger 001 vs 002: Check the Generation Before Buying

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Skyforger 001 and 002 are different wedge generations, not interchangeable names for the same head. Check the exact loft and sole option: the newer 002 adds a wider loft menu and full-face grooves, while the original specification describes a forged head.

Identify the generation before comparing a discount

Takomo’s original wedge page calls its specification Skyforger 001. The 002 page describes a cast 8620 head. Do not carry the original’s forged S20C description into a listing for the newer model.

Verified Skyforger choices
Generation Loft and bounce menu Distinctive specification
001 48°/8°, 52°/10°, 56°/12°, 60°/12° Forged S20C
002 F 46°, 48°, 50° with 8°; 52°, 54°, 56° with 10° Full-face grooves; F sole
002 V 52°, 54°, 56°, 58°, 60° with 12° Full-face grooves; V sole

These are the published combinations, not proof that every option is in stock. In particular, the 002 does not offer every grind at every loft. Select the actual option before comparing the total price or assuming that a matching set is available.

Choose a loft job before a sole

Decide whether this club will mainly handle full approaches, shorter square-face pitches, bunker shots or face-open shots around the green. One wedge may do several jobs, but ranking them helps prevent a purchase based on an attractive finish or a bounce number considered in isolation.

For a gap wedge, start from the pitching wedge you actually own. Compare useful carry distances rather than assuming four-degree loft spacing always produces equal yardage spacing. Our wedge-gapping guide shows how to record that transition.

Read F and V as different sole choices

Takomo describes the F option around a thicker sole and square-face use, while the V design uses rear-sole taper for versatility with an opened face. Those are manufacturer design positions. They do not establish which one will work best with your delivery or local turf.

A useful trial includes the lies you regularly face: a closely cut apron, ordinary fairway grass and your course’s typical bunker sand. Keep the same ball and target when comparing options. Notice how the leading edge sits when you open the face as well as whether a normal swing digs or skips.

The bounce and sole guide explains why two wedges with the same printed bounce can still interact differently with the ground. Do not translate a single bounce figure directly into “for beginners” or “for experts.”

Full-face grooves are not a promise of extra spin

The groove area on the 002 is a visible design distinction. It does not justify claiming more measured spin than the 001 without a controlled comparison. Nor does it remove the importance of face cleanliness, strike and the condition of a used wedge.

If you are comparing old stock with a used example, ask for clear face and sole photographs of the actual club. Check the leading edge, groove area and whether the shaft or grip has been changed. A generation label is only one part of the used-club description.

Check the order before taking it onto grass

The special 7-iron trial described for standard Takomo iron sets is not a wedge trial. Read the unused-product return requirements before hitting a newly delivered wedge. Confirm handedness, loft, sole, shaft and length together, particularly if you are replacing just one club.

A discounted 001 may be worth considering when its exact loft and sole fit a known job. Choose the 002 because a verified configuration suits your shots, rather than because a newer model number automatically implies better results. Keep your current wedge as the reference until the new club earns its place through consistent carry and usable misses.
