Choose the tracking routine first: V5 with its supplied tags, or S50 with Club Prompt, CT1 tapping or CT10 automatic sensors. Then compare the complete UK package and whether the S50’s everyday smartwatch features are worth paying for.

Compare three tracking routines, not just two watches

The V5 specification combines GPS and full-hole maps with automatic performance tracking and an app advertised without subscription fees. Its tag instructions identify 16 supplied tags that must match the clubs in your app. That makes the complete V5 package a clear starting point for a golfer buying primarily to record rounds.

The S50 manual allows club statistics through compatible accessories or Club Prompt. Garmin’s tracking description distinguishes CT1 tags, which you tap to the watch before a shot, from CT10 automatic sensors. They are separate accessories. A bare S50 price should therefore not be compared with a complete V5 tracking bundle as if the hardware were identical.

Choose the interaction you will actually maintain
Route During-round habit Buying implication
V5 with its correct tags Follow automatic-tracking and PinCollect routine Check tags and charger are included
S50 with CT1 Deliberately tap the club tag to the watch Add the compatible tag package
S50 with CT10 Use the supported automatic sensor routine Identify starter versus full sensor set
S50 with Club Prompt Confirm club after a detected shot Try prompts before buying extra tags

Walk through one awkward hole in the demonstration

Ask how each system handles a provisional ball, a penalty, a short chip and a putt from off the green. You do not need every event to be automatic; you need to understand what you must enter or correct. Then ask to edit a sample round in the app. A tidy scorecard is not necessarily a correctly located stroke record.

For CT1, imitate changing clubs and tapping before a shot while wearing your normal glove. For V5 or CT10, learn the required wearing and detection routine from the applicable instructions. Decide which action is easiest to remember without interrupting your group. The best statistics package is of little use if you stop recording after three rounds.

The S50 also has a job away from the course

S50 includes an AMOLED screen, heart-rate sensor and broader activity features. Those can justify its place on a shortlist if you want an everyday smartwatch as well as golf distances. Treat them as an additional use, rather than evidence that it must capture golf shots more accurately than V5. We have not carried out that comparative test.

Try both watches beneath a waterproof cuff and look at the screen from a normal address position. Check button or touch access, strap comfort and charging convenience. If you already wear another everyday watch, consider whether you would actually replace it with the S50 or keep switching devices. Paying for an all-day role you will not use weakens the value case.

Separate basic golf from paid extras

V5’s checked specification includes its app without subscription fees. For S50, enhanced CourseView, green contours and touch targeting are among the membership features described by Garmin. Do not assume those extras are necessary simply to record every type of basic golf information, and do not import S70’s virtual-caddie feature into this comparison.

Ask for a UK total covering the watch, the exact chosen sensors and only the membership features you intend to activate. Check the renewal amount and cancellation terms in your own UK account. A starter set with fewer sensors is a different order from equipping the whole bag, even if both listings say “automatic tracking”.

Buy around one useful question about your golf

Choose a question such as whether your approaches repeatedly finish short or which long club produces useful outcomes. Plan to review a few rounds with that question in mind, correcting missing shots before drawing conclusions. This turns the recording routine into a practical purpose instead of collecting statistics for their own sake.

V5 is a focused shortlist choice when golf tracking is the main job and the supplied-tag routine appeals. S50 makes sense when its everyday role and your preferred tracking option justify the complete cost. Our V5 guide and shot-tracking sensor guide explain the setup details to check next.
