Scotty Cameron Phantom 3.2 vs Phantom 12: Compact or Larger Mallet?

Phantom 3.2 and Phantom 12 differ in shaft connection, footprint and face construction—not just head size. Try both at a comfortable length, then compare how you aim short putts and control longer ones. Left-handed buyers should note that the current Phantom 12 is listed right-handed only.

The two additions at a glance

Scotty Cameron’s official 2026 announcement identifies the following distinctions.

Phantom 3.2 and 12 reference specifications
Feature Phantom 3.2 Phantom 12
Format Compact mid-mallet Larger high-MOI mallet
Connection Plumbing neck;moderate toe flow Mid-single-bend shaft;minimal toe flow
Face Studio Carbon Steel insert Aluminum face
Handedness Right andleft Right
Stock lengths 33,34,35 inches 33,34,35 inches

The listed stock loft and lie are3.5 and 70 degrees. Those measurements describe the starting configuration; your setup should determine whether an available build fits. We have not tested the putters or measured a performance difference between them.

Do not let the larger head settle the decision

Place each behind the same ball and aim without making a stroke. Ask a fitter to check whether the face points where you intend. Repeat this several times after stepping away, because an alignment impression from one address position may not be repeatable.

The 3.2 combines a compact rounded form with several visual cues, while the 12 provides a longer single sight line and larger footprint. More visible structure is helpful only if you use it comfortably. A player who feels distracted by one head should explain that response rather than assuming the more stable design must be easier to aim.

Our putter selection guide provides the broader context. Here, keep the comparison tied to these two head-and-connection combinations.

Match length before evaluating feel

Begin in a comfortable stance with relaxed arms. Try the appropriate stock length and ask whether the sole sits sensibly without forcing your hands higher or lower. Do not compare a 35-inch model with a 33-inch alternative and attribute every difference to the head.

The putter length guide helps you prepare for the appointment. If a custom adjustment is recommended, confirm the manufacturer-supported order route and final specifications before payment.

Separate start direction from pace

Use a short straight putt to assess aim and start direction, then a longer putt to judge distance control. Alternate the putters in small groups. Keep the same ball and avoid changing technique deliberately to rescue one model during the test.

Note the normal pattern rather than the longest streak of makes. On longer putts, ask whether one consistently leaves you short, runs past, or creates a wide range of finishing distances. A different face feel may be noticeable without producing a useful improvement in pace.

Neck and shaft design also affect the complete comparison. Do not conclude that all compact mallets behave like3.2 or all large mallets behave like12. The connection, grip and finished length are part of the product you are selecting.

Check the exact US offer

Confirm handedness and length with the retailer, especially when ordering a left-handed3.2. Ask whether the demonstration model matches the current retail version and whether any fitting adjustments change the return terms. A tour prototype photograph is not an order specification.

Compare the actual fitted total, including any customization, shipping and tax. Keep the headcover and receipt with the specification record. Choose the model whose setup and pace you can repeat across distances; the shape that wins your first visual impression still needs to pass that practical test.
