PING i540 Irons: Building a US Custom Set Without Unwanted Clubs

Build an i540 set from the distances you need, then request only the clubs that cover them. PING lists 4-iron through utility wedge, but that catalog range is not a requirement to buy every club. Your longest useful iron and the transition into existing wedges should determine the order.

Start with the available heads, not a retailer’s default package

The official i540 page identifies a 4–9, PW and UW lineup. It also provides standard, Power and Retro loft columns. Ask the US retailer to quote the specific heads and specification you want, rather than assuming the most prominently advertised set is the only route.

The important first task is to list your existing clubs and their useful carries. Mark any duplicates or awkward gaps. Buying a new iron family is an opportunity to improve that coverage, but adding more heads without measuring the transition can reproduce the same problem in a new bag.

Questions for a custom i540 order
Part of the set Question to answer before ordering
Longest iron Does it separate usefully from the next iron and your hybrid?
Middle irons Are your ordinary approaches predictable across the group?
PW and UW Which creates the better transition to the wedges you keep?
Loft specification Which complete loft column was fitted?

The utility wedge deserves its own trial

PING lists the standard i540 PW at 42° and UW at 47°. Treat the UW as a candidate for a particular full-shot role. If you own a specialty wedge nearby in loft, compare its actual carry, turf response and partial-shot usefulness before ordering both.

You may prefer the set wedge for familiar full-swing appearance, or the specialty wedge for the short shots you play. The useful answer depends on what each contributes. A gap on paper is not automatically a gap on the course, especially if two differently built clubs produce similar carries.

See our wedge-gapping guide for that transition. Keep the club you already trust in the fitting comparison so its replacement must demonstrate a reason to exist.

Choose a loft column deliberately

Power and Retro are fitting alternatives, not universal upgrades. Ask which configuration produced your preferred flight and whether that setup changes the relationship with your woods and wedges. Record the full specification; the word “custom” alone will not help a retailer reproduce it.

Also record length, lie, shaft and grip. Those choices interact in the finished club. If the fitting recommendation changes substantially after a different shaft trial, confirm that the final loft and lie recommendation still applies to the chosen assembly.

Do not buy a long iron to complete a sequence

A 4-iron can be a useful club for one player and an unnecessary expense for another. Compare it from normal turf with the club that currently covers that distance. Include the poor strike you need to manage, rather than choosing from a single clean shot.

If your best set begins at 5-iron or 6-iron, ask for that exact order. Have the retailer confirm any minimum club count or packaging restriction rather than assuming either a full set or a single-club option must be available.

Check the quote club by club

Ask for a line-item list identifying every head, shaft, grip and adjustment. Compare its count with your proposed bag before payment. Have the seller confirm the delivery estimate for the entire set and explain how a delayed individual head would be handled.

Our distance worksheet provides a place for the final carries, while our PING club guide gives context for the surrounding range. Keep the build sheet and check the delivered clubs against it before adding alterations.

A good custom i540 set is complete when your useful distances are covered. It does not need to include every head PING makes, and its value should be judged by the clubs you will actually play.
