PING Hoofer Monsoon vs Callaway Fairway C HD UK

UK carry-bag comparison · Sources checked 9 October 2026

Shortlist the PING Hoofer Monsoon if you prefer a five-way top, convertible straps and a published 20-litre pocket capacity. Shortlist the current Callaway Fairway C HD if you prefer its four-way rubberised top and eight-pocket layout. For a wet winter round, the useful winner is the bag you can carry comfortably and organise without repeatedly exposing dry kit.

When the Monsoon’s layout makes sense

The extra top section gives you another place to divide the set. That may suit a golfer who wants to keep wedges, short irons or a particular putter arrangement separate. It does not establish that every club has an individual full-length sleeve: a five-way top is a description of the top layout.

Try your own set, particularly an oversized putter grip. Put the bag on its legs, take out the clubs you use most and replace them without holding neighbouring clubs aside. Then repeat with the bag upright. A layout that looks tidy empty may behave differently when the grips share the space below.

If changing between one and two shoulder straps is part of your routine, the PING’s convertible arrangement is worth trying. For the wider PING range, our PING bag guide separates the regular Hoofer, Hoofer 14, Pioneer and Moonlite.

When the current Fairway C HD makes sense

Callaway’s eight pockets give you more separate storage locations to investigate. They do not prove more total capacity than PING’s six. If you like keeping balls, spare gloves, food and small accessories apart, inspect the pocket sizes and openings rather than treating the count as the result.

Its rubberised top, named strap system and FLEX POD base are features to examine during a demonstration, not evidence that it will feel more comfortable or stand more securely for every golfer. Check how the bag sits against your back after adjusting it with your usual kit inside.

Be careful with familiar-looking names. Fairway C, Fairway C HD and Fairway 14 HD should not inherit each other’s features. Our Callaway bag guide covers the separate Fairway 14 HD decision.

Read the weather claims without turning them into a guarantee

PING uses water-repellent construction and seam-sealed pockets in its own description, although the retailer’s title uses “waterproof”. Callaway specifies 10K waterproof fabric and sealed zips. Those descriptions are useful, but they are not results from a shared whole-bag rain test.

Ask the seller to confirm the supplied hood, how it attaches and which care instructions apply. Try reaching one club and a spare glove with the hood fitted. Keep a wet towel away from dry layers and use additional protection for a phone or documents when needed. Our waterproof bag guide explains how fabric, closures and packing work together.

A useful loaded comparison before you order

Bring the items that make a winter round different: waterproofs, a spare glove and your usual drink, alongside your normal clubs and balls. Use the same load in both bags. Comparing one empty bag with another that contains a display set tells you little.

Adjust the straps, walk a short circuit in the shop and practise several pick-ups and set-downs. Check whether you can reach your ball pocket without loosening the straps or disturbing dry clothing. If you sometimes use a trolley, test the actual supports and strap position too; a cart-strap channel does not establish universal fit.

Finally, compare the delivered price for the correct colour and version, the included items and the returns terms. Choose Monsoon for the five-way arrangement if it works better with your clubs, or Fairway C HD for its current four-way, eight-pocket arrangement if that is easier to live with. Avoid paying for a layout you like in photographs but find awkward when loaded.
