The pitching-wedge label hides a meaningful difference
The G740 specifications list a 40° pitching wedge and 45° utility wedge. The G440 chart lists 42° and 47° respectively. Compare the actual lofts of every proposed club, including the wedges you already own.

These are design lofts, not promised distance gaps. A familiar club number can produce an unfamiliar result, and a tidy loft progression does not automatically produce equal carry steps.
Test the sole from the ground
PING describes G740 with a wider sole and longer blade. Those physical distinctions are useful reasons to try it from your normal lies. A launch-monitor session on a forgiving mat may answer the flight question without fully answering how the head moves through your course’s turf.
Hit ordinary approaches, including the slightly heavy contact that occurs in your normal game. Notice which club leaves a playable outcome. Tell the fitter whether you usually play firm ground, soft conditions or a mixture, and ask whether an outdoor follow-up is possible.
Choose the longest iron by usefulness
Do not automatically start the order with the lowest number shown in a catalog. Compare the prospective longest iron with your hybrid or fairway wood. If its carry is barely separated from the next iron, or you cannot launch it usefully, another club type may fill that slot better.

Finish and custom loft choices
G740’s Midnight finish has specific restrictions in PING’s current notes: Power and Retro loft options are unavailable, and lie-angle adjustment is limited to ±1° from standard. If that finish appeals to you, confirm its compatibility with your fitted specifications before paying.
A finish change should not quietly replace the lie or loft configuration that worked. Ask the seller to identify exactly which build is being quoted. If the intended specification cannot be supplied in that finish, decide whether appearance or the measured fit has priority.
