Choose a stock L.A.B. putter when its actual dimensions suit your fitting. Choose custom when you need a different specification, and understand the direct-order return exclusions before paying. A more expensive configuration is not automatically a better fit.

Use the DF3 as a concrete example
The stock DF3 lists a 69-degree lie, matte black finish and premium steel shaft. Its custom counterpart offers a wider specification menu: the standard-length category lists 28–38 inches and 63–79.5 degrees of lie. Other build types have different ranges.
Those are ordering possibilities, not recommendations to choose an extreme dimension. Establish the length and lie that suit your setup before spending time on finish, alignment or shaft options. Our putter-length guide can help you prepare for that conversation.
The direct return routes are different
| Order type | Published return distinction | Buyer implication |
|---|---|---|
| Stock, new condition | 14 days; no restocking charge | Inspect before using |
| Stock, used | 14 days; $75 restocking charge | A playing trial has a cost |
| Custom | Fitting required for eligibility; 14 days and $150 restocking charge | Complete a qualifying fitting before ordering |
The full policy applies condition requirements and customer return-shipping costs. Purchases made through another retailer go back through that retailer. Check the terms of your actual seller rather than assuming the manufacturer’s direct policy overrides them.
Separate a fitting need from a cosmetic preference
Write down which custom changes solve an identified problem. A particular lie or length may be essential to reproduce the fitting. A color or alignment treatment may simply be a preference. Both can be valid choices, but they should not be presented as equally necessary for performance.
If you are uncertain about a premium shaft, compare an actual demonstrator where possible. A shaft upgrade’s price is not evidence that you will aim or control distance better with it. Ask what was tested and which differences the fitter observed, then decide whether that evidence justifies the additional spend.
Do not plan to make a stock putter custom later
A stock purchase followed by a local alteration is a separate project. Get the manufacturer’s advice about the intended change before assuming that a shortened shaft, different grip or lie adjustment will reproduce a factory configuration. Discuss both the work and the finished balance, rather than treating the head as independent of the build.
The putter-grip size guide is useful for describing your preference. It does not establish compatibility with every L.A.B. build. A comfortable grip shape still needs to be considered as part of the complete putter.
Keep a final order record
Save the fitting recommendation and compare it with the basket line by line. Record model, handedness, build type, playing length, lie, grip, shaft and any alignment choice. “DF3 custom” on its own is not enough information to check a delivery.
The custom product page warns that changing a finalized order may require cancellation and reordering. Resolve uncertain details first. If you are ordering before a trip or event, get a current delivery estimate rather than relying on a general lead-time statement from an older article.
Which route makes sense?
Stock deserves first consideration when you have established that its dimensions work and you like the standard specification. Custom makes sense when a verified fitting points elsewhere or you knowingly value the available preferences enough to accept the different cost and terms.

Use our putter-selection guide to keep aim, pace control and setup in the decision. A useful purchase is one you can explain in those terms. Do not make the return policy your fitting method, or a long custom-options list your reason to buy.
