Approach G20 Solar makes sense when you want readable GPS yardages without wearing a golf watch. A watch remains more convenient when distances should follow you to every ball automatically. Choose from your walking or riding routine first; the G20’s solar claim is conditional and should not be read as a promise that you will never charge it.

Where will you read the distance?
The G20 Solar announcement describes a 2.2-inch high-contrast screen, a built-in magnet and a belt clip. That gives it a clear role on a cart or clipped to the golfer. A watch offers a different convenience: its location usually moves with the wrist without a separate carrying decision.
| Situation | G20 Solar consideration | Watch consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Riding cart | Mount where readable; take it to the ball | Already with the golfer |
| Walking with a push cart | Clip or mount securely | Quick wrist glance |
| Dislike wrist wear | Avoids a watch during the swing | Try size and strap first |
| Need detailed color maps | Check the exact handheld’s feature set | Compare a specific mapping watch |
| Frequent shade or pocket storage | Solar exposure reduced | Follow normal charging routine |
A cart-mounted GPS measures from the cart
If the cart is parked away from the ball, remember where the GPS device is when reading its number. Take the handheld with you when you need a distance from the playing position. A convenient mount is not a way to remove the effect of standing somewhere else.
Think through cart-path-only days and occasions when two players share a cart. If one player drives away with the handheld, the other has lost access. A watch avoids that particular inconvenience, while a handheld may be easier for more than one person to read when together.
Solar helps only when the device receives suitable light
Garmin’s unlimited-battery claim assumes continuous 75,000-lux conditions. That is a specific bright-light condition, not an average promise for a shaded course, cloudy day or device kept in a pocket.
The G20 manual explains the solar charging behavior. Keep the normal charging option available and follow storage and temperature instructions. Do not leave the device in excessive heat simply to increase exposure. Judge it by your actual use rather than treating solar as a substitute for every charging check.
Decide how much information you want
Basic green distances and a clear display can be enough for an established course-management routine. If you want rich color mapping, an interactive target view or broader fitness functions, compare a particular watch that supplies them rather than assuming all golf watches do.
Our GPS and rangefinder comparison explains how mapped positions differ from measuring an actual visible target. Neither wearing nor clipping the device changes that fundamental distinction.
Connected extras need a separate check
Confirm phone compatibility and the functions you want to use with the Garmin Golf app. Garmin describes Find My Garmin as showing the device’s last known location; it is not a guarantee that a misplaced unit can be tracked live or recovered.
If shot tracking matters, verify the exact supported accessory and complete configuration. Do not buy CT1 merely because it is another Garmin club tag; the G20 product material identifies CT10. Hardware families are not universally interchangeable.
Choose for a normal round, then protect the routine
Before leaving a rented cart, include the GPS in the same check as your rangefinder, phone and belongings. Inspect the clip or mounting surface and use only suitable accessories. Our distance-tools hub helps decide whether this device fills a real gap alongside equipment you already own.

Choose G20 Solar when avoiding wrist wear and reading a separate display are valuable enough to justify carrying it. Choose a watch when immediate access at each ball matters more. Keep the battery claim, connected functions and exact model features separate from that central convenience decision.
