Callaway Opus SP vs Vokey SM11: UK Wedge Fitting Shortlist

Compare Opus SP and SM11 at one defined wedge slot, using suitable sole options and the ball you normally play. The correct loft, grind and complete build matter more than choosing a brand-wide winner.

Begin with one gap and one principal shot

Choose the wedge slot before comparing Opus SP with SM11. A gap wedge used mainly for full approaches asks a different question from a high-lofted club used from bunkers and open-faced lies. Bring the clubs either side of that slot so the fitter can see the existing distance coverage.

Callaway describes the Opus SP Spin Pocket as moving weight higher to promote a lower flight. Titleist’s SM11 specification chart presents a range of loft, bounce and grind combinations. Treat the flight description and sole choices as trial candidates, not a guaranteed result or a direct equivalence between the manufacturers’ grind letters.

Compare the exact wedges rather than the brand families
Question What to match or record
What distance must it cover? Measured gap from the neighbouring clubs
Which loft is being tested? Actual loft, including any adjustment
Which sole? Full grind name and stated bounce
What kind of shot? Full approach, pitch, chip or bunker use
What build? Shaft, finished length, lie and grip

A matching loft does not make the soles identical

Ask the fitter to show the sole width and relief on the two candidates and explain why each was chosen for your intended shots. Bounce is part of the description, but a single number does not capture the whole sole. Do not assume an S, D or other letter means the same geometry across brands.

Start square-faced if that is how you normally use the club, then add any open-faced shots that genuinely feature in your rounds. There is little value in choosing a specialist configuration for a shot you rarely attempt while making your everyday pitch less comfortable.

Test the ball you expect to play

Use comparable balls in good condition and alternate short groups. Note landing position and release as well as carry. If the fitting uses a different ball from your usual one, record that limitation and avoid treating small spin differences as a precise forecast for the course.

Leave ordinary misses in the assessment. A clean strike may help compare feel, while the less successful shots reveal what the sole and complete build allow you to repeat. We have not measured spin or dispersion for these wedges, so the trial should decide rather than an invented ranking.

Include the bunker that matters to your game

If the club will be your main bunker option, ask for a sand trial under instruction where possible. Describe the usual sand conditions at your course and any difficulty you have with entry or exit. One soft practice bunker may not represent every lie, so treat it as part of the evidence rather than a universal verdict.

Our wedge-bounce explanation helps with that conversation. The Callaway wedge guide supplies family context without substituting for a comparison of the exact Opus SP and SM11 configurations.

Compare the complete UK orders

Request the actual head, finish, shaft, length, lie and grip in writing. Include any custom charge and delivery, and ask whether the fitted configuration is available in the required hand. A headline starting price may refer to a different loft or stock shaft.

Choose the wedge whose fitted combination covers the intended distances and greenside shots most comfortably. If both work similarly, feel, appearance and complete cost can reasonably decide the purchase. Avoid buying an additional wedge merely to fit a brand sequence if the current bag already covers that shot.

Search results may include older Opus models or other Vokey generations. Check the exact SP or SM11 designation, loft and grind before ordering.
