Adjustable driver weights can change head mass or move the centre of gravity, depending on the model. Establish which adjustment your driver actually offers before buying parts or copying a setting. A heel-to-toe track is not the same as replacing a weight with a heavier one, and neither is the same as changing the hosel. Use the exact manufacturer instructions and compare results outside a round, with the original setting recorded first.

Titleist SureFit: a model-specific example
Titleist’s guide distinguishes GT3 track positions from replacement-weight options. Its GT3 chart lists T2, T1, N, H1 and H2 with toe, centre and heel strike considerations. It also provides separate mass tables for different GT driver and fairway models.
Use the table for your exact club. Similar branding does not establish that a driver weight fits a fairway head.
Identify what the driver permits
Read the manual and inspect the model name before touching a screw. Some visible components are not intended as user-adjustable settings. A fitting feature advertised on another head in the family should not be assumed for yours.
Separate three questions: can the position change, can the mass change, and are compatible alternatives supplied? A seller should identify the exact replacement part, not merely describe it as suitable for many drivers. If compatibility is uncertain, resolve it with the manufacturer or a qualified clubmaker.
Save the starting configuration
Photograph the original positions and record any numbers on the weights. Note the shaft, playing length, loft marking and hosel setting. This gives you a clear route back if a change does not help and prevents a later fitting from starting with an unidentified setup.
If you bought the driver used, ask whether its weights are original. Do not assume the current configuration represents the manufacturer’s stock build. An aftermarket part may have a different mass even when its shape looks familiar.
Change one variable at a time
Choose the question you want the comparison to answer. For example, you might test two approved track positions while keeping the same shaft, ball and hosel setting. If you change several components at once, it becomes difficult to know which difference mattered.
Use a range or fitting session, then record a group of normal shots for each configuration. Include strike location and the pattern of misses alongside carry. A single ball that curves less does not establish that a setting has solved an underlying swing issue.
Read draw and fade labels as fitting guidance
Manufacturer labels indicate the intended adjustment direction, not a guaranteed ball flight for every player. Your delivery and impact pattern still matter. If a setting creates a worse overall dispersion despite one pleasing shot, the label is not a reason to keep it.
Ask a fitter to help when the result is inconsistent or you cannot identify your normal strike area. Adjustability can make a fitting more precise, but it does not replace the need to observe what your shots do. Avoid treating maximum draw as a universal prescription for every slice.
Use the approved parts and procedure
Titleist specifies its SureFit wrench and genuine compatible components in the linked guide. Follow the equivalent instructions for your own driver, including how to seat and secure the part. Do not invent a torque value or assume that any tool which engages the screw is appropriate.
Check connections as the manufacturer directs. If threads are damaged, a part will not seat or the head makes an unexplained noise, stop using it until the issue is assessed. Continuing with an uncertain attachment is not a useful fitting experiment.
Keep adjustments outside the round
Under Rule 4.1a(3), a player must not make a stroke with a club whose performance characteristics were deliberately changed during the round, including during a suspension. The rule includes a limited restoration exception for an adjustable feature; read the full current provision if that situation arises.
The practical approach is to complete fitting changes before play and leave the approved configuration alone during the round. Do not confuse a permitted pre-round adjustment with permission to tune ball flight between holes.
Keep the setting that earns its place
After a useful comparison, save the final configuration and why it was chosen. Revisit it only when there is a practical reason, such as a build change or a persistent new pattern. Clear records make adjustable weights a fitting tool instead of an endless sequence of undocumented experiments.
