Choose H4 if you want a separate handheld for GPS and manual shot tagging. Choose CONNEX if you are happy using your phone as the display and tapping each club tag against its NFC reader. Neither is the automatic, no-tap routine of a Shot Scope tracking watch; the important decision is which interaction you will repeat reliably.

Follow one shot from club selection to recording
The H4 specification describes a dedicated GPS handheld. CONNEX support instead describes scanning a tag against the phone’s NFC reader while the appropriate app screen is open.
| Task | H4 | CONNEX |
|---|---|---|
| Read distances | Dedicated handheld | Phone app |
| Record club selection | Tap tag against H4 | Tap CONNEX tag at phone NFC reader |
| Carry during play | Handheld and club tags | Compatible phone and CONNEX tags |
| Phone screen requirement | No phone screen for on-course tagging | App scanning screen must be available |
| Main ownership check | Device condition and package | Phone NFC behavior and tag type |
CONNEX is a deliberate phone interaction
Check where your particular phone’s NFC reader sits and whether its case interferes with a consistent scan. Look for the documented confirmation rather than assuming that touching a tag anywhere on the back of the phone records a stroke.
The screen-lock guidance says tags cannot be scanned with the phone locked. The app offers a virtual lock to reduce accidental inputs while leaving its scanning function available. That is different from the phone operating system’s lock screen.
H4 needs a tagging habit too
Place the handheld where the tap is easy before a shot. Try the belt clip or another approved carrying arrangement with the clothes you actually wear. A device buried in a pocket beneath other equipment is less likely to become a consistent habit.
Shot Scope’s missed-tag guidance allows correction afterward when a shot was forgotten. Review a first round while you still remember it and judge how often you needed that correction.
Do not mix tag families by brand alone
The CONNEX English manual distinguishes its mobile-enabled tags from the traditional black Shot Scope tags. An older general support statement that all tags work across devices should not override the specific CONNEX requirement.
When buying used equipment, ask for the exact tags and model identification. A bag of familiar-looking screw-in tags is not proof that the proposed phone or handheld system is complete.
Choose the screen you already use willingly
If you regularly open a phone map before shots, CONNEX may fit that existing behavior. If you deliberately keep the phone away during golf, the handheld is the more natural starting point. Neither preference needs a performance claim to be valid.
Our GPS app guide can help evaluate the phone routine. Our shot-tracking guide explains how dependable records become useful after the round.
Check availability and the full package
We have not confirmed current new US H4 stock. Treat an offer as a specific device-condition purchase: check charging, buttons, display, tags, clip and current app connection. Support documentation remaining online does not guarantee a new product is available.
These affiliate links open Amazon US search results for the named equipment or accessories.
Check the exact model, generation and seller. Results can include alternatives; a search link does not confirm availability. Use the official supplier links for specialist products and services.
For CONNEX, confirm that your phone completes onboarding and scans consistently before depending on it for a full round. Choose the system whose tap, confirmation and review routine is easiest to maintain; missing half the inputs defeats the purpose of collecting detailed statistics.
Sources and method
We checked Shot Scope H4 specification, CONNEX scanning instructions, CONNEX phone lock, H4 missed-tag instructions, CONNEX English manual. Product facts come from these official sources; the decision steps are our editorial guidance. Confirm the exact US package and current terms before ordering.
