Approach S44 does not need a paid membership simply to act as a golf distance watch or upload ordinary scorecards. Garmin Golf membership adds specific tools, including richer course maps, touch targeting, green contours and PlaysLike distance on this model. Decide whether you need those functions before activating a recurring plan.

What remains useful without subscribing?
Basic green and hazard information is part of the watch’s golf role. Garmin’s membership FAQ separately identifies free app functions such as scorecard upload, shot-history review and performance statistics. The free app and the paid membership are not interchangeable names for the same service.
Use the included features first if your needs are straightforward. If you normally want a quick distance and a score record, an unfamiliar premium icon is not a reason to assume the watch is incomplete.

Maps and touch targeting solve a different task from basic yardage
A more detailed hole picture can help when planning a landing area on a course you do not know. Touch targeting lets you select a point rather than accepting only the usual distance readout. Think of the last few rounds when you wanted that information before deciding how much you value it.
The S44 owner guidance identifies these as additional membership functions. It does not say the membership turns the S44 into every higher-tier watch or supplies all of their hardware features.
Check the course before paying for contours
Confirm that Garmin supplies contour data for the courses you actually play. A course appearing in the general map database does not establish that every premium layer is available for it.
Also decide how you intend to use the information and check the rules applying to your competition. Buying access to a feature does not establish permission to use it in a particular event. Keep ordinary distance needs separate from specialist green-reading data.
Understand the phone and download routine
Garmin’s support guidance describes premium map checks and downloads when a compatible watch starts a round while paired with the Garmin Golf app. Set up the account and verify the intended course before arriving at the first tee.

Compare monthly and annual plans from the current US offer
Garmin offers monthly and annual membership choices, with renewal terms that need attention. Read the price and tax displayed in your US account, the renewal date and the cancellation route before activating. This guide deliberately does not carry forward the dollar prices from the original watch launch.
If offered a trial, use it to test the features on your own courses and calendar a decision before renewal. A short trial is useful only if you actually play enough during it to evaluate the extra functions.
Keep accessories and other software separate
