Approach S70 deserves consideration when you want its richer included mapping, touch targeting and Virtual Caddie, or a different case size. S50 is easier to justify when elevation-adjusted distances and everyday smartwatch functions cover your needs. The S70 upgrade is most useful when you will build and maintain the shot history behind its advice.

Identify the on-course function you would gain
Garmin’s current US model comparison distinguishes the premium golf tier from S50’s broader everyday proposition. Do not reduce the choice to which watch is newer or which has the larger list of health functions.

|---|---|---|
| Included detailed course mapping | Premium option requires membership | Included course mapping |
| Touch targeting | Membership feature | Included |

Virtual Caddie needs your own usable history
The S70 Virtual Caddie manual requires five tracked rounds, using sensors or Club Prompt, plus uploaded scorecards and a paired phone connection during rounds. It uses the hole, wind information and recorded club performance to form recommendations.
This makes the upgrade more compelling for a golfer prepared to record clubs accurately and review the data. If you rarely sync rounds or leave incorrect club labels uncorrected, buying the feature does not automatically produce dependable advice.
A recommendation is still a starting point. Consider the lie, the shot you can execute and the consequence of missing. The watch has not watched you practice every possible recovery shot.
Touch targeting is useful on unfamiliar holes
Think about the questions you ask during a round: distance to the green, a layup point, a bunker carry or a preferred landing area. If the latter questions arise regularly, interacting with the hole map may matter more than a small difference in appearance.
Try the actual screen with your usual viewing distance and finger movement. Our S70 guide provides further model context; this comparison focuses on whether those tools improve your routine enough to justify moving beyond S50.
Compare the exact size, not an averaged S70
The S70 comes in different case sizes, so inspect the intended variant’s display, fit, weight and battery specification. A battery figure for the 47 mm version should not automatically be assigned to the smaller model.
Try it during a normal grip and wrist movement, then consider all-day wear. A large readable display can be attractive while the smaller case is more comfortable for a particular wrist. Neither preference establishes a universal winner.
Membership is still a separate line item
Green contour access remains a membership feature and depends on course coverage. Do not read “premium watch” as a promise that every current or future Garmin service is included permanently.
Check the exact features you would subscribe to on each watch and compare the resulting ownership cost. Avoid paying for a richer map solely because it exists if you have no regular use for it. Our distance-tools hub helps organize the different types of information a golfer can use.
Choose the watch and the data routine together

Choose S50 when its included distance and everyday features satisfy the task at an acceptable total. Choose S70 when the mapping, interaction, fit or data-based club advice answers a specific need. If Virtual Caddie drives the purchase, include the recording routine in that decision: the watch is only one part of keeping the history useful.
