Will Garmin CT1 Work With Your Existing Watch?

CT1 works with more Garmin watches than the original S44/S50 launch announcement listed, but it does not follow that every CT10-compatible watch can use it. Check the exact model against Garmin’s current support list and update the watch before buying. For an older S42 or S62, do not treat a general Garmin Golf app listing as CT1 confirmation.

Use the accessory support list, not the app list

The Garmin club-tracker compatibility article separately lists devices that scan CT1 tags and devices that pair CT10 sensors. A watch appearing in the Garmin Golf app’s supported products establishes app compatibility, not compatibility with every accessory the app can analyze.

This distinction is especially useful when buying a used watch. Ask for its exact model and software version rather than relying on a seller’s statement that it supports golf sensors.

Why older marketing summaries can mislead

Garmin’s broad watch comparison material and its detailed accessory support article do not currently describe every newer compatibility addition identically. For a purchase, the specific support list is more useful than inferring a permanent limit from the models mentioned at launch.

Conversely, absence from a list is not proof that a future update is impossible. It means this guide has not established that purchase as supported today. Do not spend money on the expectation that a promised or rumored update will arrive.

Check the watch you have in your hand

Find the model and software details in the watch’s system information. Install the current official update through Garmin’s documented route, then look for the club-tracking options described in the CT1 setup instructions. A missing option after updating is a reason to contact support with those exact details.

Do not use unofficial firmware or reset a functioning watch merely because an online comment says a menu should exist. Keep its golf records synced before routine maintenance. For S42 owners, our S42 guide provides context for the existing watch rather than assuming it must be replaced.

Confirm that the tag set matches your bag

CT1 tags use club assignments. If your bag contains an unusual combination, check how to assign the included tags to those clubs before recording a round. A scan that labels a club incorrectly undermines the distance history even when the hardware connection works.

Check the grip-end installation, particularly with unusual putter grips or existing counterweights. Do not force a tag into a grip arrangement that its supplier has not approved. A retailer should be able to help confirm the installation or direct the question to Garmin.

Decide whether a watch change is actually worthwhile

Add the price of a replacement watch to the tags and any features you plan to subscribe to. Compare that total with keeping the current watch and using a compatible tracking method. If your main need is basic green distance, a new recording accessory may not solve the most important problem.

Our tracking-sensor guide helps compare the recording routines. Try the tapping action before making a larger hardware change solely to obtain CT1.

Keep a clear confirmation record

Retain the exact model, support-list check and retailer’s return terms. If support remains uncertain, ask Garmin whether that watch and current software can scan CT1, not merely whether it works with Garmin Golf. That precise question avoids buying the right tags for the wrong host.
