Takomo 301 CB and MB: Ordering a Combo Set in the US

The listed Takomo 301 Combo uses cavity-back 4–7 irons and muscle-back 8–PW irons. Treat that changeover as a specific set design: make sure you want a blade-style 8-iron before ordering it simply because a combo sounds like the best of both worlds.

What the factory combo actually contains

The 301 Combo specification identifies the split explicitly. Both head types use one-piece forged S20C construction. A shared material does not make the two shapes behave identically on your missed strikes.

The listed 301 Combo arrangement
Clubs Head type Decision to make
4–7 301 CB Can you launch and control the longest iron you will carry?
8–PW 301 MB Do the shorter muscle-back heads give you a usable margin on ordinary misses?

This is not evidence that any custom split is available. If you want CB through the 8-iron or a different starting club, ask Takomo for an explicit configuration and quote. Do not assume a request entered in an order note will change the factory package.

Test the changeover, not just your favorite iron

The most useful comparison is around the 7-iron and 8-iron transition. You want predictable carry spacing, a comfortable visual progression and similar confidence when the lie is imperfect. A great pitching-wedge strike says little about how you will use the first muscle-back club in the sequence.

If a fitting facility has suitable demonstration heads, alternate the transition clubs and include shots that are slightly thin or toward the toe. You are assessing whether the resulting misses remain acceptable, not trying to prove that a blade is impossible to hit. Our cavity-back versus blade explanation provides the broader design context.

Also check whether the 4-iron belongs in your playing set. If your existing hybrid reliably reaches a useful carry window, keep it in the comparison. Paying for an included long iron does not create an obligation to carry it.

The return trial has an important limitation here

Takomo’s standard stock-set policy permits a trial of the 7-iron while the remaining clubs stay unused and wrapped. In this combo, that trial club is a CB. It therefore cannot provide a hands-on trial of the MB section while preserving that particular return route.

That makes a pre-order fitting, borrowing a comparable demonstrator, or a clearly understood acceptance of the uncertainty more valuable. Ask the seller before opening an 8-iron if trying the muscle-back head is essential to your decision. A manufacturer’s general return headline should not be treated as permission to play every club.

Make the build consistent across both head types

Write down the shaft model, flex, playing length, lie and grip specification for the complete set. Confirm whether the quoted configuration covers both the CB and MB sections. If you request different lengths or loft adjustments, get the final individual-club specification rather than relying on a set-wide description.

Progression matters more than making every number identical. A fitter may recommend different adjustments across a set for a reason; the important point is that the intended result is documented. Our guide to 7-iron loft explains why the stamped number alone is not a distance specification.

Where a full CB set may be the clearer purchase

Keep the full CB option on your shortlist if the MB changeover is mainly an aesthetic ambition, if your main goal is more predictable mishits, or if you cannot evaluate the shorter blades before committing. Conversely, the combo is worth investigating when you have a concrete preference for the MB scoring clubs and a reason to retain CB long irons.

Finally, compare the new pitching-wedge gap to your existing wedges using the wedge-gapping process. The successful purchase is a coherent set you can use under normal playing conditions. The words “forged” and “combo” do not substitute for that check.
