Start the Scottsdale TEC fitting with the shaft connection and your comfortable address position. The Ally Blue Onset, Ally Blue H and longer Onset CB offer a useful first comparison; their similar names conceal meaningful differences in setup and adjustment.

Three starting points within the range

PING lists seven Scottsdale TEC models. Rather than trying every head in random order, first compare the Onset and H versions of Ally Blue, then decide whether the longer CB build belongs in the test. This separates the shaft connection from the counterbalanced setup before appearance influences the purchase.

Three Scottsdale TEC specifications to compare
Model Published standard length Connection and fitting distinction
Ally Blue Onset 35 inches Onset shaft; straight-stroke designation; fixed loft and lie
Ally Blue H 35 inches H1 hosel; slight-arc designation; adjustable loft and lie within PING specifications
Ally Blue Onset CB 37.75 inches Longer build with 17-inch grip; fixed loft and lie

These distinctions come from PING’s Onset, H and Onset CB pages. A stroke designation is a starting point for a fitting, not a diagnosis based on handicap. The broader putter selection guide explains the other setup variables.

Why length comes before the alignment graphics

Set up to a ball without reaching for the putter. Have someone check whether your hands can settle naturally on each grip while the sole sits sensibly. A longer CB model should be assessed in its intended configuration; gripping a standard putter several inches down does not reproduce its complete balance.

Take photographs from the same positions with each candidate. Compare shoulder tension, arm hang and how easily you can look down the target line. Keep the shoe height and ball position consistent. If the longer grip encourages an awkward stance, the head’s appearance is unlikely to solve that discomfort.

The fixed loft and lie on the Onset versions make this especially relevant. Do not order one on the assumption that a shop can subsequently bend it to match your existing putter. Ask the fitter to confirm which factory configuration actually suits you before paying. Our putter length guide can help you prepare the measurements.

Give each head two separate jobs

Use a straight short putt to observe start direction, then a longer putt to assess distance control. Alternate heads in small groups so one does not benefit from every warm-up attempt. Record the tendency, including misses, instead of counting only consecutive makes.

For the short putt, ask whether your chosen aim matches the target before moving the club. For longer putts, note whether you repeatedly leave the ball short, run it past, or vary widely. Those are different problems and may lead to different fitting adjustments. The graphics you like looking at are useful only if you can use them consistently.

Try the other family shapes after identifying a workable connection and length. PING also lists Ketsch and Hayden alternatives in the TEC family. Request the exact model sheet rather than transferring Ally Blue measurements to another head.

Ordering from a US shop

Put the complete model name, handedness, finished length, grip and any permitted fitting adjustments on the quote. Include the fitting charge and applicable tax when comparing offers. A shop’s display price does not establish whether your requested build is available or returnable after customization.

Ask whether a demo can be used outdoors before committing. If the decision remains close, keep the configuration that gives you a repeatable setup across both distances. A more elaborate head or longer grip is not an automatic upgrade over the one you already aim comfortably.
