Titleist GTS3 vs GT3: Upgrade or Keep the Previous Driver?

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Keep your GT3 unless a properly compared GTS3 build provides a useful improvement that justifies the upgrade cost. The new model brings a different adjustment package, but a newer head is not evidence that your current club has stopped fitting you. Begin with your existing driver as the baseline, including its real settings and condition.

Record the GT3 you actually own

Write down your head loft, hosel position, track setting, shaft model, playing length and grip. Check whether the club has been shortened or regripped since its original fitting. The club in your bag may differ materially from the standard specification shown in an old order confirmation.

Photograph the settings and keep a few recent examples of the problem you want to solve. “My misses fall short of the fairway” is more useful than “I want the latest driver.” If the current club has a damaged shaft or loose component, have that assessed before treating its performance as a fair baseline.

Understand the generation change without predicting a winner

The official GT3 information describes its adjustable CG track. GTS3 adds a dual-weighting system alongside its track and hosel adjustments. Those are available fitting controls, not measured gains for your swing.

Three outcomes of a GT3 upgrade session
Observed outcome Reasonable next step
GTS3 improves a repeatable weakness Price the exact tested build
GT3 improves after a setting or fit change Compare that less expensive route before replacing it
Neither separates consistently Keep the current club and revisit when there is a clearer need

Reuse a shaft only after checking the whole build

Titleist’s SureFit guidance lists GTS and GT driver shaft interchangeability. That makes a controlled trial possible, but it does not mean every secondhand shaft listing is accurately described. Verify the driver adapter, actual playing length in the chosen head and the shaft’s condition.

Using the same suitable shaft can help isolate the head comparison. After that, a different shaft may improve the total package. Keep those two questions separate: whether you benefit from the new head, and whether you benefit from a differently fitted club. Our shaft and playing-length guide explains why the measurement needs to be explicit.

Compare two complete shot patterns

Warm up with your GT3, then alternate short groups between the two clubs. Use the same ball and intended shot. Ask for carry and dispersion over the whole group, with strike location visible where the equipment permits it. A little more total distance can be unhelpful if the result depends on rollout you rarely get at your course.

Include the miss you normally play around. If that is a heel strike, ask whether the proposed setup improves its useful result without damaging your normal strike. Do not redesign your swing during the comparison simply to make one club produce the desired screen numbers.

Return to the GT3 near the end. If its result now matches the GTS3, the early difference may have been warm-up or familiarity. A second session is reasonable when the purchase depends on a marginal improvement.

Calculate the real upgrade cost

Compare the complete GTS3 quote with any realistic sale or trade value for your GT3. Include a replacement grip, adapter work or fitting charge only where actually required. Keep a trade-in quote separate from a promotional headline: the amount finally credited may depend on the submitted club and the offer terms.

For broader model context, use our Titleist range guide. Save the chosen configuration and the fitting report before releasing your old driver. That gives you something concrete to check when the new club arrives.

An upgrade is worthwhile when it changes a shot you care about, not when it merely wins a specification comparison. If you cannot identify that change after a fair trial, keeping a well-fitted GT3 is a complete decision.
