OpenPlay keeps an independent golfer’s handicap active
OpenPlay can suit someone who plays different courses and wants a Scottish Golf handicap without joining a local club. A course membership solves a different problem: regularly playing the same venue under the rights of a chosen category. Start with your actual rounds and booking needs rather than comparing a small subscription with a large club bill in isolation.
Record your usual courses, visitor prices and preferred times. A membership close to home can be useful for frequent short rounds; it will not save the green fees for trips you still take elsewhere. Treat partner discounts as a possible bonus, rather than a reason to buy equipment you had not planned to purchase.
Check the conflicting published prices before subscribing
The OpenPlay page’s main price cards show £59 annually or £6.99 monthly. However, a lower section still displays £50 and £4.99. Because the same official page contains both pairs, confirm the amount and payment period on the application before entering a commitment. We have used the headline cards for the comparison below, not promised the lower amount.
At £6.99 for each of twelve monthly payments, a year would total £83.88; the £59 annual headline is £24.88 less. This is arithmetic using those displayed prices. It does not prove which plan best suits a short period of play, or remove the need to read cancellation terms. The advertised benefits include Scottish Golf membership, a WHS handicap and app functions; booking access is not a prepaid green fee.
Eligibility and the scoring process matter
The OpenPlay terms require primary residence in Scotland and exclude current members of Scottish Golf affiliated clubs. Under-14s need a parent or guardian’s permission. For an initial handicap, the terms specify the equivalent of 54 holes on a Scottish course with scores verified by a playing marker. A previous handicap record is a separate transfer question to resolve with Scottish Golf.
The subscription continues until cancelled. The terms require cancellation at least seven business days before renewal, with expiry on the next payment date; read the application’s payment period as well. Moving into club membership does not produce a refund for unused OpenPlay time. Save the agreed price, renewal date and cancellation instructions together.
A published Scottish club cost example
Ratho Park’s 2026 seven-day schedule lists annual totals of £1,103.20 for gents and £1,101.50 for ladies, including the stated levies. It also lists a £300 joining fee payable over three years, starting with £100 on application. That makes the displayed first-year cash totals £1,203.20 or £1,201.50 on that instalment basis, before any additional purchases. Confirm the applicable category and whether places are available.
| Issue | OpenPlay with visitor rounds | Seven-day club category |
|---|---|---|
| Course payments | Add every booked visitor round | Confirm what access the subscription includes |
| Competition entry | Ask the organiser about independent-golfer eligibility | Check category rights and entry conditions |
| Booking priority | Check each course’s visitor booking window | Request the actual member booking rules |
| First-year cost | Agreed subscription plus green fees | Subscription, levies, joining payment and remaining extras |
Compare the year you are likely to play
Make a month-by-month estimate, then reduce any optimistic round count to the slots you can actually use. A golfer with one free weekday afternoon has a different comparison from someone who can play only at popular weekend times. Ask to see the booking system at relevant times or speak to the club about demand before joining; a seven-day category does not itself guarantee your preferred tee time.
Keep a separate line for joining-fee instalments in years two and three. A first-year comparison should not make the remaining commitment disappear. Also ask about renewal timing, compulsory levies, course restrictions, practice charges and any family or age-related category that legitimately applies.
Leave money for the rest of your golf
Budget for the coaching you want and review the equipment and other insurance questions separately. This article does not assert that OpenPlay includes a particular insurance policy or that a club’s small insurance line covers every loss. Choose independent golf when variety and a handicap are the main needs; choose a local club when its real access and membership experience justify the complete cost.
