Some electric golf trolley batteries exceed the normal passenger-aircraft limit. Check the exact watt-hour rating and the operating airline’s written requirements before assuming that removal from the trolley makes the battery safe or permitted to fly.

Find the watt-hour rating on the actual battery
Start with a clear photograph of the battery label, its model number and its chemistry. The trolley’s name alone is insufficient because manufacturers offer different battery versions and older trolleys may use replacements. A claim that a battery lasts 18 or 36 holes does not state its energy capacity.
The CAA’s current packing guidance says lithium batteries above 160Wh are prohibited in ordinary passenger baggage; batteries in the 100–160Wh range need airline approval. When the label gives volts and amp-hours, the capacity calculation is volts multiplied by amp-hours. Do not use charger-output voltage or a seller’s rounded headline figure in place of the battery specification.
| Battery example or category | What it establishes | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| S1/S1 DHC CLICK N CONNECT HighPower: 198Wh | Above the ordinary 160Wh passenger threshold | Plan a destination alternative or specialist dangerous-goods transport |
| S1/S1 DHC CLICK N CONNECT ULTRA: 274Wh | Also above the ordinary passenger threshold | Do not pack it in checked or cabin baggage |
| Different battery rated 100–160Wh | Within a range requiring airline approval | Send exact label and use to operating carrier |
| Missing, damaged or unreadable label | Capacity and condition are not established | Resolve with manufacturer and airline before booking carriage |
The two named capacities come from the specific Motocaddy S1/S1 DHC manual. They are examples, not a statement about every Motocaddy or PowaKaddy product. They also show why simply removing the battery from the trolley does not solve an excessive-capacity problem.
Carrier acceptance is a separate decision
The easyJet dangerous-goods page limits its listed spare lithium-ion batteries to 160Wh, with a maximum of two in cabin baggage and individual short-circuit protection. That general entry does not approve your particular trolley battery. Ask the operating airline to classify the exact item and explain where it must travel, whether approval is required and how that approval is recorded.
Include the battery model, Wh rating, chemistry, manufacturer documentation, whether it is installed or spare, and both flight numbers. A reply about laptop power banks is not necessarily an answer about a golf trolley. Keep the airline’s written response with the booking and check any connecting carrier independently.
Do not borrow the mobility-aid exemption
Airlines have separate provisions for mobility aids used by passengers with restricted mobility. Those rules can contain higher limits and specific handling procedures. They do not automatically apply to an electric golf trolley because it has wheels or makes walking a course easier. Describe the equipment accurately and let the airline determine the applicable category.
Never change a label, conceal a battery in the golf bag or split a battery pack to try to fit a limit. Do not travel with a swollen, damaged or overheating battery. Buying a small protective pouch or disconnecting the terminals cannot make an otherwise prohibited capacity acceptable.
Choose a practical alternative before the holiday
Ask the destination course whether it can reserve a push trolley, an electric trolley or a buggy for your playing dates. Confirm availability, collection, charging arrangements and any course restrictions. If hiring a battery alone is proposed, the exact electrical system, connector and manufacturer compatibility must match your trolley; visual similarity is not sufficient.
Transporting a large lithium battery separately requires a service that explicitly accepts and handles dangerous goods. An ordinary luggage courier quote is not that confirmation. For a short holiday, leaving the complete trolley at home may remove more complexity than taking the chassis and trying to source power abroad.
What to buy only after approval
Our electric trolley battery guide helps organise model and replacement questions. The trolley travel-bag guide covers carrying the chassis, but a bag provides no aviation permission. The accessory links below concern ordinary packing equipment, not approved battery transport or a destination hire booking.
