Compare Pro T-1 and T-3 at the same intended distance and shot role. T-3 adds a shallow cavity and has a different sole menu, so choose the exact loft and profile in a fitting rather than deciding from the model number.

The cavity and sole menu change together
Mizuno’s Pro T-3 page describes a shallow cavity and slightly longer head, with S, M and C sole profiles. The Pro T-1 page lists six profiles: S, M, P, C, V and X. T-3 therefore offers a different head and a smaller sole menu, rather than simply applying the T-1 name to a more forgiving appearance.
Start with the loft and principal shot you need. At 56°, for example, the T-3 chart lists 56/06 C and 56/10 M. Use the actual table for the selected T-1 loft when choosing the corresponding candidate. A matching letter across the family should still be assessed as a complete sole and head.
| Job | Useful comparison |
|---|---|
| Fuller approaches | Carry gap and ordinary short strikes |
| Basic pitches | Landing point and predictable release |
| Bunker club | Contact and escape from representative sand |
| Open-face speciality | Sole behaviour in the intended setup |
| Iron-set transition | Feel, length and distance below the pitching wedge |
Do not reject a cavity because of your handicap
A golfer who strikes irons well can still prefer additional help in a wedge, while another player may value a particular T-1 sole for a frequently used shot. Describe the actual task to the fitter rather than asking which head is designed for a handicap number. The comparison should establish the most useful complete wedge for you.
Bring the existing wedge and the clubs either side of the proposed purchase. If the new wedge does not create a distinct usable gap, reconsider its loft or role before choosing a head. This prevents a visually attractive club from creating an extra problem at the scoring end.
Test contact and pace with the same ball
Alternate small groups using your normal ball in comparable condition. Record carry and the finish after landing, especially for partial shots. A stronger strike from one club can feel impressive without showing a repeatable advantage. Keep the ordinary misses visible in the notes.
If your fitting uses a different shaft or playing length in one candidate, record the difference. The preferred complete build is still a valid buying result, but it should not be described as proof that the cavity alone caused better distance control.
Include turf before choosing relief
Try the principal shot from an ordinary lie, with the face positioned as you normally use it. Add open-faced shots if they matter to the purchase. Ask the fitter to explain why the chosen sole makes sense for your delivery and local conditions, rather than selecting the most versatile-sounding option by name.
For a bunker role, use representative sand where possible. A wedge that looks comfortable when opened on a mat still needs to prove useful on the intended surface. There is no requirement that all wedges in a bag use the same model if different roles are better served by different fitted clubs.
Keep finish, handedness and the quote aligned
Mizuno distinguishes finish availability by handedness. Confirm the exact head and sole in your required hand rather than assuming every finish is offered identically. Then record shaft, length, lie and grip, including any custom charge and delivery.
Use the Mizuno range guide for model context and our bounce guide for the terminology. These support the fitting conversation rather than supplying a universal T-1 or T-3 verdict.
Choose T-3 when its complete head and sole combination suits the shots you need. Choose T-1 when its available profile and fitted behaviour are the better match. Search results can mix lofts, finishes and generations, so confirm every part of the selected wedge before ordering.
