A useful golf rangefinder needs to find the intended target repeatedly, show a readable distance and let you select the right mode. Start by checking units, target selection and slope settings before concluding that a different number means a faulty device.

Check the simple causes first
Confirm that the display uses yards or metres as intended, then follow your exact model’s manual to select the mode. Bushnell’s rangefinder support guidance specifically points readers with apparent distance discrepancies towards the unit setting. Also check the battery and lens-care instructions for your model.
A flag, the middle of a green and a tree behind it are different targets. A laser reading to the flag therefore does not have to match a GPS reading labelled centre of green. Separate accuracy, repeatability and target acquisition
Accuracy concerns closeness to a reliable reference distance. Repeatability concerns whether repeated measurements agree. Target acquisition concerns whether you selected the intended object. A set of similar readings is reassuring about repeatability, but it does not prove that you measured the flag instead of the trees behind it.

Such features are designed to help with the aiming problem; they do not turn this article into independent evidence that one model is the most accurate. Read the manufacturer’s accuracy conditions and distinguish them from maximum measuring range or display increments.
A practical check you can record
The following is a suggested comparison procedure, not a test we have performed. Use a safe practice area with permission and avoid disrupting play.
- Write down the device model, units, mode and battery condition.
- Choose a clearly identifiable stationary target. Keep the measurement position and target the same.
- Take several readings in actual-distance mode, releasing and reacquiring the target between readings.
- Record every reading and any failure to acquire a distance. Note weather, obstructions and whether the device confirmed the target.
- If you have access to a reliably measured reference to that exact target, record how it was established. A second consumer device provides a comparison, not automatically a ground truth.
- Repeat after checking the manual if the results are inconsistent. Keep the notes for the retailer or manufacturer if a problem persists.
A simple log needs columns for target, reference method, units, individual readings and conditions. Avoid turning a small informal check into an advertised precision claim. To compare products fairly, you would also need a clear reference method, repeated trials, consistent settings and a transparent account of uncertainty.
Use the correct mode in competition
The R&A’s distance-measuring guidance permits distance or direction information, while restricting elevation measurement and certain interpreted advice during a round. A Committee can also prohibit distance-measuring devices through a Local Rule. Check the competition conditions and switch prohibited functions off; do not assume that owning a slope-capable device means every mode is allowed.
What to compare before buying
Try the display and controls if possible. Check whether you can hold the device comfortably, identify a target, read the result and change modes without guesswork. Confirm the exact model’s weather protection, battery arrangement, UK warranty route and return terms. These practical checks are more useful than an unsupported league table of decimal-point errors.
If an existing unit still gives suspect results after the model-specific checks, contact the seller or manufacturer with your notes. Do not open the device or invent a calibration procedure. A repair or replacement decision should follow the manufacturer’s guidance and the evidence you have recorded.
