Choose stiff or regular golf shafts by comparing specific models in a suitable complete club. The letters are not a universal measurement across brands, and a switch can change weight or profile as well as flex. Use swing speed as one fitting input alongside delivery, strike, flight and comfort. A Stiff label does not automatically mean better control, while a Regular label does not automatically provide more useful distance.

Read the full shaft name

Start with manufacturer, model, generation, weight category and flex. A retailer may shorten the name, so ask for the label or exact specification when necessary. Keep OEM-supplied and separately sold versions clearly identified if their descriptions differ.

GolfWorks notes that flexes differ between manufacturers and that measurement conventions are not uniformly standardised. The practical lesson is to avoid replacing a known shaft with any other shaft bearing the same letter and expecting an identical result.

Use speed as an input

A fitter can use clubhead speed to help choose an initial set of candidates. It should sit alongside how you deliver the club, where you strike the face and the ball flight you produce. A rigid internet boundary cannot account for all those factors.

Do not move to Stiff as a reward for reaching a certain handicap or hitting one fast swing. Equally, do not reject Regular because of the label’s appearance. The useful choice is the one that produces repeatable golf in the club you intend to play.

Establish a baseline with your current club

Bring the existing club and note its complete specification. Hit a normal group of shots before testing alternatives, using a consistent ball and conditions. This shows whether the proposed purchase solves a real problem or mainly changes the feel.

If the current driver already gives a useful pattern, set a clear standard for replacing it. A small difference on the best shot may not justify a change when ordinary misses or comfort worsen. Compare the whole group rather than a highlight from each option.

Keep the test as clear as practical

Ask the fitter which variables remain the same and which differ. Head, loft setting, playing length and grip can all affect the comparison. When multiple aspects change, describe the result as a comparison of two builds rather than proof about flex alone.

Record the shaft labels and key results while the session is fresh. Otherwise, it is easy to remember that one club felt good but forget which weight or setting was installed. A brief build sheet protects the value of the time spent testing.

Look for a useful pattern

Assess contact, typical carry, launch conditions and dispersion. Include normal mishits and consider where they would leave you on the course. A shaft that produces a memorable maximum but an unhelpful spread may be a poor everyday choice.

Tell the fitter about your comfort and sense of the club. If two suitable options give similar results, that feedback can help decide between them. If a candidate feels wrong, discuss the actual sensation rather than assuming all shafts with that flex must feel the same.

Avoid diagnosing every miss from the label

A hook, slice or high flight can have several causes. Do not assume one recurring miss proves the shaft is too stiff or too soft. A fitting can assess the equipment while a lesson can address delivery where that is the relevant issue.

This is particularly important before an expensive reshaft of a full iron set. Ask whether one trial club or another controlled comparison can establish the benefit. The number of clubs being changed should follow the evidence, not the appeal of a new label.

Order the configuration that was selected

Confirm the exact shaft, flex, length, adapter or tip compatibility, grip and assembly details. Include labour and components in the quote. When the club arrives, compare it with the saved specification rather than accepting a broadly similar description.
