Golf shaft kick point, also called bend point, is a description of shaft bending behaviour used in specifications. It is not a promise that a shaft will produce one exact launch angle in your swing. Read it alongside the complete profile, flex, mass and intended build. If you want to change ball flight, compare suitable shafts with the same head and clear measurements rather than buying from a low, mid or high label alone.

Mitsubishi C6 Black Iron: a clear table example
Mitsubishi lists Mid kick point across the C6 Black Iron entries while the weight and flex specifications vary. For example, its 60 Regular entry is listed at 69g and its 80 Stiff entry at 84g.
Sharing one kick-point label does not make these the same shaft. Use the complete model line when discussing a fitting or replacement.
Understand the term without turning it into a hinge
GolfWorks defines bend point through the location of maximum bending in a specified compression test and cross-references kick point to that term. The shaft is not a rigid rod with a single mechanical hinge. The label summarises information rather than describing every part of the structure.
That distinction matters when reading simple buying advice. A low or high description may help organise a manufacturer’s range, but it should not be treated as a complete account of how the shaft will respond in a particular golfer’s club.
Read the whole profile
Manufacturers may also describe the tip, middle and handle sections separately. Those details can give a fitter more context than the kick-point category alone. Check the full generation and model because similar graphics or names can conceal different specifications.
Do not combine a bend-point value from one page with a mass or flex from another version. Save the exact specification line for the shaft you are considering. A precise record is especially useful when a retailer shortens a long product name.
Separate intended flight from your measured flight
A manufacturer’s launch category describes its design positioning. Your actual result also depends on the head, delivered loft, impact and swing. A shaft advertised for lower launch does not establish how many degrees lower your shots will fly.
Begin with a specific problem such as an unhelpful trajectory or inconsistent contact. Ask a fitter to assess the current club before attributing that problem to kick point. A change elsewhere in the build, or technique work, may deserve attention as well.
Avoid matching by one word
Two shafts described as Mid can still have different mass, flex, balance and section stiffness. Conversely, a different bend-point label does not tell you how large the practical change will feel. Use the label to shortlist, then compare the complete candidates.
This also applies across brands. A category is not a universally calibrated performance score. If replacing a broken shaft, ask for the exact original specification or a professionally assessed alternative rather than requesting any mid-kick shaft from a shop.
Make the fitting comparison interpretable
Keep the head, ball and playing length consistent where practical and record any other differences. Hit a group of normal shots with each suitable option. Look at strike, carry, dispersion and the resulting flight rather than selecting from the single highest or lowest shot.
Tell the fitter what you feel without needing to translate it into engineering terms. A description such as difficulty sensing the head or discomfort with the overall weight can be useful. It should sit alongside the data rather than be forced into a kick-point diagnosis.
Check installation before buying a component
The intended shaft must fit the head and be prepared according to its own instructions. Tip size, trimming and finished length remain relevant even when the advertised profile looks suitable. Ask the clubmaker to confirm the complete build before you purchase an isolated component.
Do not try to create a desired kick point by making an improvised cut. Trimming is model-specific and can affect the finished club in several ways. Use the manufacturer’s instructions and a competent builder rather than treating a general label as an assembly recipe.
Keep the decision grounded in results
Choose the shaft because the completed club meets your needs in a useful comparison. Save its model, flex and build specification so the result can be repeated. Kick point is one descriptive detail in that record, alongside more direct evidence of how the club performs for you.
